Naomi’s pov:

Elias and I orbited each other like wary planets–close enough for the mate bond to hum with unresolved tension, but distant in every way that mattered. We barely spoke nowadays.

Mornings, he’d disappear before dawn, leaving only the faint trace of his cedar scent on the sheets I’d refused to share. Evenings, he’d return late, his golden eyes shadowed, jaw set in that unyielding line that screamed resentment.

I caught him watching me sometimes, from across the dining hall or through the crack in his study door, his gaze a mix of hunger and suspicion that made my skin crawl.

I felt trapped, more than ever. The bond twisted inside me, a constant ache, urging me toward him even as my mind rebelled. How had I let it get this far? From bar waitress to alpha’s captive mate in a heartbeat.

And the poison vial–tucked away in the false bottom of my jewelry box upstairs burned in my thoughts like a secret flame. I hadn’t used it yet. Part of me wondered if I ever could.

By the third day, I couldn’t take it anymore. I needed air, space, anything beyond these walls. I slipped on a simple sundress and headed for the front doors, my bare feet silent on the cool stone.

The moment I reached for the handle, two shadows detached from the alcoves. Burly betas, both built like mountains, with shaved heads and arms crossed over their massive chests. I recognized them–Jax and Thorne pack enforcers, loyal to Elias like dogs to a master.

“Miss Naomi,” the one on the left rumbled, his voice gravelly but polite. “It’s Alpha’s orders. You’re not to leave the grounds unescorted.”

I froze, hand hovering. “Unescorted? I’m going for a walk, not a midnight rendezvous,

Move.”

The other one–taller, with a scar bisecting his eyebrow–shifted uncomfortably but held his ground. “Can’t do that, ma’am. Alpha was clear: no venturing out alone. Too many risks. Alphas from rival packs are sniffing around, temptations… you know.”

He poured himself a scotch from the decanter, his movements controlled, but I saw the tension in his shoulders. “It’s for your protection. Rival alphas, old enemies–they’d love to get their hands on my mate.”

“Your mate,” I sneered, standing to face him. “That’s all I am, isn’t it? A possession to lock away. You’ve stripped me of everything–my job, my freedom, my autonomy. I can’t even step outside without your permission. What next? A collar and chain?”

He set the glass down with a clink, turning to me slowly. His voice was cold, laced with that alpha edge. “Autonomy? Is that what you call it? Or is your desperation to leave just an excuse to run off to some alpha boyfriend from your past? Someone who doesn’t demand as much as I do?”

The accusation stung, fueling my anger. Boyfriend? As if I’d had time for that in my old life, scraping by at the bar. But his jealousy sparked something reckless in me.

I stepped closer, chin lifted defiantly.

“Yes,” I snapped, the word dripping with sarcasm. “That’s exactly it. I’ve got a whole lineup of alphas waiting. Better hurry and lock me up tighter, Elias, or I might just slip away and let them have what you’ve been dying for.”

His eyes darkened to near black, the bond flaring with possessive fury. In a blur, he closed the distance, his hand shooting out to grab my jaw–rough, fingers digging in just enough to tilt my face up to his.

“You little-”

The words cut off as he yanked me forward, crashing his mouth down on mine in a forceful kiss. It was all heat and dominance, his lips bruising, tongue demanding entry. I resisted at first, hands pushing against his chest, feeling the solid wall of muscle under his shirt.

“Stop,” I mumbled against him, but the bond betrayed me, heat pooling low in my belly, my body arching despite my mind’s protests.

He didn’t stop. His other arm banded around my waist, hauling me flush against him, the kiss deepening into something feral. I tasted scotch and anger, felt his growl vibrate through me. My pushes weakened, fingers curling into his shirt instead, torn between shoving him away and pulling him closer.

When he finally broke away, we were both breathing hard, his grip on my jaw loosening
