I settled deeper into the bench, the cool night air brushing my skin like a whisper. I stayed silent without answering.
Lucy’s energy was infectious, bubbly without being overwhelming, her laugh light and genuine as she rambled about her disastrous blind date last month.
“And then he pulls out a coin collection! Like, actual coins from the 1800s. I faked a migraine and bolted.” She giggled, tossing her hair back, and I found myself chuckling too, the sound foreign after days of tension in this mansion.
She was easy to talk to, surprisingly. Better than dealing with Elias’s brooding silence or his cousin’s–wait, she was his cousin, but somehow warmer, less like the cold alphas I’d known. No judgment in her eyes, just curiosity. For a moment, I forgot the charade, the “maid” label Elias had slapped on me like a brand. It felt… normal. Human, even, amid the wolf politics that tangled my life.
Curiosity nagged at me, though. Why was she here, popping up unannounced? I tilted my head, keeping my voice casual. “So, why the sudden visit? Elias didn’t mention anything about his family coming over.”
Lucy leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, like we were old friends sharing secrets. “Oh, it’s work stuff. Grandpa sent me to help him out at the company. There’s been some info leaked though nothing huge, but enough to rattle the board. Hacks or something. Elias is all stressed, but you know him; he acts like he can handle the world alone.”
I frowned, a knot forming in my stomach. Leaked info? Elias hadn’t said a word to me. Not over breakfast, not in his terse texts or the heated glances across the room. I stared at the pond’s rippling surface, moonlight dancing on the water. Of course he hadn’t. We weren’t close like that–mates in name, but enemies in truth. He saw me as a prisoner, a body to claim, not a confidante.
The mate bond twisted sharply in my chest, a dull ache that made my breath hitch. It hurt, that pull, like invisible chains tightening. But it was just the bond–some primal magic forcing feelings that weren’t real. I didn’t care about his problems. Not when he was the one caging me here.

“Naomi? You okay?” Lucy nudged my shoulder, concern creasing her brow.
I forced a smile, nodding. “Yeah, just… surprised. He didn’t seem stressed earlier.”
She shrugged. “That’s Elias for you–stone–faced alpha. But hey, enough about him. Tell me more about—”
“Am I disturbing you guys?”
Her words cut off as a shadow loomed over us. Elias stood at the garden’s edge, arms crossed, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dark like a predator’s. Tension radiated off him, his jaw set in that unyielding line that made my pulse quicken–part fear, part unwelcome heat.
“What the hell are you two doing out here?” he growled in irritation. “It’s late. Garden’s not for midnight chats.”
Lucy jumped up, rolling her eyes with a dramatic sigh. “Jeez, Elias, relax! We were just talking. Naomi’s keeping me company, your house is huge and boring at night.”
His gaze flicked to me before landing back on her. “Go back to your room, Lucy. I need
to talk to the… maid.”
She pouted but didn’t argue, sensing the alpha command beneath his words. “Fine, party pooper. Night, Naomi! We’ll chat more tomorrow.” She waved and skipped off, leaving me alone with him under the stars.
I raised a brow, staying seated, arms crossed defiantly. My skin prickled as his eyes bored into mine.
“What?” I asked, voice steady despite the flutter in my chest.
He stepped closer, towering over me, his scent enveloping me like smoke, “I texted you. I didn’t ask you to come to my room for nothing.”
Heat flooded my cheeks, a blush I couldn’t hide. The memory of last night flashed, his mouth on me,
his body thrusting rough and relentless. My core throbbed faintly, a reminder of the soreness, and my heart skipped again, traitorous and fast. Gods, was that why? Another round of hate–fueled sex?
“I… Lucy dragged me out here,” I complained, standing to face him, our bodies inches apart. My breath was shallow as I met his gaze. “She said she was bored and wanted company. What was I supposed to do? Say no? I’m just the maid, remember? Maids don’t deny guests.”

34 Chapter 34 Say that you hate me.
He looked at me for a long moment, his expression unreadable, but the bond pulsed with his frustration and something hotter, darker. He sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “Did it bother you? Being called that?”
I shook my head quickly, chin lifting in defiance. “Why would it? Being a maid is much better than being your mate.”
The words came out sharper than intended, laced with the resentment that simmered between us. Better to scrub floors than be chained to this alpha who hated my bloodline, who took me with possession but no tenderness.
We stared at each other, the silence stretching taut like a bowstring. His golden eyes darkened, searching mine, the garden’s shadows playing across his sharp features. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, the way the bond wound tighter, urging me closer even as my mind screamed to run. His scent intensified, pheromones wrapping around me like invisible threads, making my knees weak. Hate and desire twisted together, a volatile mix that left me breathless.
He stepped even closer, closing the gap until our chests nearly touched. “Do you hate it that much? Being my mate?”
I wanted to say yes but the bond held me captive. His nearness made my skin tingle, memories of his hands on me flooding back. I couldn’t form the word; instead, I just nodded, a small, jerky motion, my eyes locked on his.
He cupped my face then, his large hands rough but deliberate, thumbs rubbing slow circles on my cheeks. The touch sent sparks through me, the tension coiling tighter in
my core.
“Use your words, Naomi,” he murmured, his breath warm against my lips, eyes intense and unblinking.
I opened my mouth, the “yes” on the tip of my tongue–yes, I hate it, hate you, hate this bond that forces me to crave you. But before the syllable escaped, he kissed me. His lips crashed onto mine, firm and demanding, stealing my breath. My heart raced wildly, pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird.
