It was heavy.
Aria's arms were trembling.
She was still recovering from the procedure, but seeing Rufus in this state, how could she feel at ease leaving him with the Brent family?
"I hear Charles and Aria raised Rufus together. He must be very important to her."
Lilith and Gideon were standing at the door, having just finished looking through old high school photos.
Gideon, worried about Aria being outside alone, had come out to find this scene.
Charles was trailing behind Aria with a smile, while Aria carefully cradled the golden retriever in her arms.
It was as if she was afraid it would get hurt.
As if… she were treating it like her own child.
Lilith secretly watched Gideon's expression and whispered, "Grandma said Rufus used to love Rufus. She must be so happy to see him again!"
Did she love the dog, or the person she raised the dog with?
Before they were married, Gideon had heard Aria talk about getting a dog, and he had assumed she just liked dogs.
He had even sent her a message recently, offering to get a dog with her, but Aria had refused.
Gideon hadn't thought much of it.
But now it seemed it wasn't that Aria didn't want a dog, but that she didn't want to get one with *him*!
Gideon strode over.
Aria was holding the dog, panting softly, feeling a bit dizzy.
"Aria, what are you doing?" Gideon blocked her path, his voice tinged with anger. "Why are you holding that filthy dog?"
"He's just been neglected. He's not dirty."
Once his matted fur was taken care of, Rufus wouldn't look dirty at all.
In fact, Rufus was always the cleanest dog. Whenever Aria fed him, he would mimic her, washing his paws with water before starting to eat.
"Move. Get out of my way."
She had to get Rufus out of here, take him with her to her small rented apartment.
That would be Rufus's new home.
