Flora bit her lip, subconsciously glancing at Charles, who had been worrying by her side the whole time.
She had only been making an excuse to leave the birthday banquet early, but with Charles watching over her so attentively, she found it hard to keep up the act.
After all, since she started impersonating the clinical trial participant, she had never actually taken any painkillers in front of him.
She just deliberately exaggerated the pain during her period each month to make Charles believe it was a side effect of the medication.
But it was, in fact, a coincidence.
The drug's side effects did include painful periods.
"Charles, just stay with me..."
Flora nestled in Charles's arms, a feverish, unnatural heat radiating from her skin. Her fingers unconsciously found their way to his cool arm.
Since they started dating, their relationship hadn't progressed beyond intimate kisses and hugs.
Charles had said he was worried that taking that next step might be bad for her health.
He also wanted to save that moment for their wedding day.
But for some reason, tonight Flora felt dizzy and overwhelmed, and she didn't want to pretend anymore.
"Charles, I feel awful..."
Charles's brow furrowed. He reached out and touched Flora's forehead. Her cheeks were flushed an unnaturally deep red.
It was a stark contrast to the frail appearance she'd had just moments ago.
"What's going on?"
Charles instinctively looked at the glass of water Flora had just been drinking.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed some white powdery residue on the inside of the glass. He then recalled Harold's guilty expression from earlier.
How dare he...
"Charles..." Flora wrapped her arms around him from behind. "I feel so bad... Don't reject me..."
"You're all I have... I only want you..."
Charles's initially stiff hands slowly relaxed.
He owed Flora, and he had to repay his debt.
If this was what she wanted...
"Stop it!"
Aria shoved Harold hard and quickly gathered Rufus into her arms to check on him.
But Rufus was already weak and barely conscious.
"Aria, look at what your precious dog did!" Harold pointed at his leg. "It bit me!"
Rufus was a large dog, and even though he wasn't in good health, the bite was severe.
Harold collapsed to the ground, two puncture wounds on his leg steadily seeping blood.
The servants heard the commotion and hurried over. Seeing Harold's injury, they immediately called for an ambulance.
This day was turning into a complete disaster. First Lilith, then Flora, and now Harold.
The Brent family home was in total chaos.
By the time Helena arrived after being notified, the ambulance was already there.
She saw Harold's injury, faltered, and nearly fainted. Roxanne had to support her to prevent her from making a scene.
