“What’s all the noise about?” Aria muttered, annoyed as she forced her eyes open.

Hearing her voice, Gideon instinctively let go of Raphael and sat down by her bed. “You’re awake? I brought you a gift. Want to see it?”

Aria pointed a hand toward the door. “The best thing you can do for me is to finalize our divorce next month and then leave me alone.”

Gideon didn't seem annoyed. He simply pulled the gift out from inside his coat. Aria’s eyes were still half-closed and blurry. She felt a lick on her cheek and shot her eyes open in shock, finding herself face-to-face with a small golden retriever puppy.

“Looks familiar, doesn’t he?” Gideon placed the puppy in Aria’s arms. “Since Rufus is gone, how about you let this little guy keep you company?”

He not only thought of Rufus as just a pet to Aria, but he also believed her affection could be so easily transferred.

Aria was silent for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh. “Should I thank you? I already told you, I’m not getting another dog. What are you trying to pull now?”

“Do you think your dog and my dog are the same? Stop trying to be clever, Gideon. Now take your dog and get out!”

Raphael straightened his clothes and opened the door. “Pets aren’t allowed in the hospital room. Aria is due for a dressing change soon, and it increases the risk of cross-infection. You should take the dog home.”

Gideon’s expression clouded over. “We’re not divorced yet. Aria is still my wife. From now on, I’ll be the one taking care of her. You don’t need to trouble yourself, Raphael.”

“You’ll take care of her?” A hint of mockery flashed in Raphael’s eyes. “Then what about the one at the Keene Group's hospital?”

Gideon froze, instinctively looking at Aria. When he saw that she didn’t seem to care in the slightest, he felt both frustrated and wronged. He hadn’t gone to see Lilith at all these past few days. The first thing he wanted to do after dealing with company matters was to see Aria, and he had personally picked out this dog for her. But Aria showed no appreciation at all. She didn't even like the puppy.
