After All the Hurt, She Chose Herself novel Chapter 234

***

After waking up, Roxanne rushed to the hospital room.

Seeing Lilith's body covered by a white sheet, her legs felt weak.

"Gideon! Why couldn't you come to see Lilith one last time?! Do you have any idea that until the very end, she was begging me to let you see her? She loved you, did you really not notice at all?!"

Gideon remained silent.

Roxanne lunged forward and grabbed Gideon's arm, her grip so tight she might have broken her own nails.

Her eyes were red as she pleaded, "Can you attend Lilith's funeral as her surviving partner? I'm begging you, please?"

"My daughter suffered so much in her life. Can't you let her wish come true after her death?"

"My wife is Aria," Gideon said, looking away, unable to meet Roxanne's gaze. "I can't betray Aria."

In just a few days, Aria was supposed to have been formally inducted into the Evernight family.

But she had miscarried because of him. After losing the baby, she'd had a hysterectomy; she couldn't even have children anymore.

If he attended Lilith's funeral as her widower, what would that do to Aria?

"Ma'am, Lilith is gone. You're thinking of her in every way, but what about Aria? No one is thinking about her."

Aria's words had gotten to him.

All a woman wanted was blatant favoritism and unconditional trust.

Since he had married Aria, he should try to see things from her perspective.

He couldn't keep letting her be wronged.

The baby wasn't lost because of him. It was because Aria never wanted his child in the first place!

And here he was, feeling guilty about it every single day.

He was such a fool!

"Ma'am, I agree to attend Lilith's funeral as her surviving partner."

Gideon said through gritted teeth, "If Aria doesn't want to be my wife, she can give the position to someone who does."

"Gideon, you're a good boy. All I want now is for Lilith's wish to be fulfilled. I didn't mean to tell you the truth. Actually, Lilith kept urging you to get a divorce because we suspected something. We were worried you would get hurt. Now that Lilith is gone, I just don't want you to be deceived by Aria. If she could harm her own child, what wouldn't she do... what wouldn't she do to my poor Lilith?"

As she spoke, Roxanne began to wipe away her tears again.

"Lilith died under mysterious circumstances. Charles told me, and I consent to the autopsy. I just can't accept that I didn't even get to see her one last time! The doctors said they had successfully revived her. But at that time, they also said she was emotionally unstable and shouldn't be agitated. I'm worried... did Aria go and say something that caused Lilith to..."
