After waking up, Roxanne rushed to the hospital room.
Seeing Lilith's body covered by a white sheet, her legs felt weak.
"Gideon! Why couldn't you come to see Lilith one last time?! Do you have any idea that until the very end, she was begging me to let you see her? She loved you, did you really not notice at all?!"
Gideon remained silent.
Roxanne lunged forward and grabbed Gideon's arm, her grip so tight she might have broken her own nails.
Her eyes were red as she pleaded, "Can you attend Lilith's funeral as her surviving partner? I'm begging you, please?"
"My daughter suffered so much in her life. Can't you let her wish come true after her death?"
"My wife is Aria," Gideon said, looking away, unable to meet Roxanne's gaze. "I can't betray Aria."
In just a few days, Aria was supposed to have been formally inducted into the Evernight family.
But she had miscarried because of him. After losing the baby, she'd had a hysterectomy; she couldn't even have children anymore.
If he attended Lilith's funeral as her widower, what would that do to Aria?
"Ma'am, Lilith is gone. You're thinking of her in every way, but what about Aria? No one is thinking about her."
Aria's words had gotten to him.
All a woman wanted was blatant favoritism and unconditional trust.
Since he had married Aria, he should try to see things from her perspective.
He couldn't keep letting her be wronged.
