"I am no longer Mrs. Evernight."
The call disconnected instantly.
The secretary's jaw dropped as she finally placed the voice. It was Aria! No wonder the number looked so familiar. It was the company's former top performer, her old boss. Everyone knew Aria was practically a foundational pillar of the corporation. Unlike Henry, Aria was tough on herself but incredibly kind to her subordinates. She had never made things difficult for anyone.
The ambulance arrived with flashing lights, and the paramedics rushed Gideon away. But the secretary wasn't family, and she had no idea how to contact the rest of the Evernight clan. Once they reached the ER, the doctors demanded a family member's signature for his treatment. Out of options, she pulled out her own phone and dialed Aria's number.
Back at the restaurant, the atmosphere in the private dining room was lively. None of them were drinking alcohol, but they had gone through several rounds of juice. Mira was in the middle of a hilarious story, keeping the mood light and joyous.
When Aria's phone rang again, she initially intended to ignore it. But seeing that it wasn't Gideon's number, she frowned and answered.
"Ms. Rowan, it's really an emergency. Mr. Evernight is in the ER, and the doctors need a family member to sign off. I know you don't want to come, but could you please contact his family for me? I'm terrified his treatment will be delayed if no one signs..."
Aria arched an eyebrow. So Gideon had actually landed himself in the hospital. She had assumed he was just putting on a dramatic act to manipulate her, considering they had only parted ways a few hours ago.
"What exactly happened to him?" she asked.
"It looks like severe alcohol poisoning. I have no idea what triggered it, but he suddenly downed a massive amount of liquor..."
Aria instantly recalled Gideon's bizarre phone call earlier. The pieces clicked into place.
"I understand. Text me the hospital's address. I'll make sure his family gets there."
Raphael was sitting right next to her. Once the secretary texted the location, Aria slid her phone over to him.
"Gideon is in the ER. As his family, you need to go."
Aria had absolutely zero desire to deal with Eveline, and Aldous was too old to be handling sudden medical emergencies without risking his own health. Raphael was the only logical choice.
"Gideon?" Raphael looked down at the address on her screen. "What did he do this time?"
Aria bluntly relayed the alcohol poisoning incident.
