The lack of information was, in itself, a good sign. It meant they were on the right track. It was impossible to completely erase every trace of two living people.
Aria thought for a moment. “Every cancer patient, whether it’s acute or not, undergoes regular treatment. They started at this hospital, so we can start our investigation in the oncology department here.”
The mother had cancer but was able to give birth, which proved her cancer wasn’t acute; her body could handle a pregnancy.
But why was the birth premature…
Aria looked up. “I suspect Lilith’s premature birth wasn’t an accident. It was deliberate.”
“Because Sylvia was giving birth that day, that woman’s child had to be born on the same day.”
The best chance for a successful swap would be before Sylvia had even seen her baby for the first time.
That was when it would be least likely to be discovered.
The thought of this possibility made Aria’s eyes begin to well up.
At first, she had thought Lilith hated her for stealing her life. Every time they spoke, Lilith would claim that Aria had stolen her future, which was why Lilith had such a miserable childhood and had gotten sick at such a young age.
Aria had indeed felt guilty.
Such illnesses could be triggered by one’s environment.
Even as her current theory grew closer to the truth, Aria didn’t feel any sense of relief.
From the very beginning, Roxanne had likely been manipulating Lilith, planting ideas in her head and turning her against Aria.
Poor Lilith. Used as a pawn from such a young age, she died without ever knowing the truth about her own life.
“There can’t be that many couples who are both cancer patients. Add the fact that Lilith’s biological mother was also pregnant, and it should be easier to narrow down.”
Raphael put his phone down.
Mira had grasped some of it. “Are you saying that Roxanne… was the one pulling the strings behind all of this?”
Aria nodded. “It’s highly probable.”
Mira was stunned. “...That’s terrifying.”
