After returning to the Evernight estate, Aria carefully placed the divorce agreement into a folder.
Then she slept for a few hours.
Her internal clock woke her at eight.
She went downstairs to find Eveline sitting on the sofa. Upon seeing Aria, Eveline looked her up and down. "Drink your supplements."
On the table was a bowl of a dark, murky liquid.
Aria had no appetite and simply ignored it.
Eveline's face soured. "Married for three years and you can't even produce a child. What good are you?"
Aria was immune to these words by now. She grabbed her car keys, ready to leave.
"The old master wants to see you!" Eveline called out. "Be back here at three this afternoon!"
Aria paused.
Old Mr. Evernight had been in relatively good health over the years, but Gideon never allowed Aria to accompany him to the family estate, even for holidays. She could count the number of times she'd seen him on one hand.
Now that they were on the verge of divorce, she was getting a chance to see him again.
Aria couldn't refuse. After all, her twenty million dollars were still in their hands.
"I understand."
She was heading to the company to sort things out. It had been agreed that once she resolved the contract issue, her resignation would be processed.
After learning her identity, Henry had become slightly more courteous and hadn't given her a hard time about her resignation.
After going over her performance bonus with the finance department, Aria felt a small sense of relief.
With the money she had saved over the years, she was only half a million short of thirty million dollars.
Five hundred thousand was no small amount.
"Ms. Rowan, are you really resigning? Where are you off to for a better position? Is there a better company out there than Evercrest Prosperity Holdings?"
Aria shook her head. "I don't plan on working in this industry anymore."
The other person was clearly incredulous. After all, she had seen the commissions Aria had earned over the past few years.
How could someone just walk away from such a lucrative job?
"You're really something, Ms. Rowan. I guess you've already earned enough, right?"
Aria just smiled.
She had worked with Gideon for many years, but when it came time to pack, she realized she didn't have much. Everything fit into a single small box.
Aria stood up straight. "It's not because of anyone else. It's because I finally see that Gideon doesn't love me."
She had once confidently promised Old Mr. Evernight that Gideon would fall in love with her within three years.
Now, with the three-year mark approaching, she was the one asking for a divorce.
Aria felt a bit embarrassed.
"That woman... I can make her disappear."
"It really has nothing to do with anyone else. Besides, she's sick," Aria said softly, pursing her lips. "It's only natural for Gideon to be concerned about her."
If Lilith were to disappear at this moment, Gideon would undoubtedly trace it back to her, assuming she had tattled to his grandfather.
She didn't want any more trouble.
She just wanted her twenty million dollars and to get away from Gideon for good.
CRASH—
A cup shattered at Aria's feet.
Startled, Aria quickly looked up.
"I do not approve of this divorce!" Old Mr. Evernight slammed his cane on the floor, his voice firm and powerful. "As long as I disagree, Gideon won't dare to divorce you! And you won't get a single penny!"
