Chapter 268

He said, “Mom wanted us to be happy and to have a future we could count on.”

Alicia sniffled. “I’ll be just fine.”

Now that she’s away from them, she can finally live her own life-free and happy.

Kevin tried to keep the conversation going. “Do you know who Nicole’s biological father is?”

Alicia knew they’d figured out she was behind Mavis’s ex-husband’s mess. “Whoever is the most protective of her and treats her the best is probably her biological father.

“If that’s all, I’m hanging up.”

She was deliberately giving Kevin a heads-up.

She mainly wanted them to watch out for that miracle doctor, and not let Mavis and her daughter use him to stir up trouble or get away with something.

Kevin could tell Alicia wasn’t in the mood to keep talking.

So he just said, “Go ahead and hang up. If you ever need anything, you know how to reach

us.”

As he mulled over her words, a name suddenly flashed through his mind.

Lately, someone had been going out of their way to shield Nicole.

Alicia hung up.

It was the first time Jason had ever seen Alicia tearing up.

His own mom was a hopeless romantic who only cared about her own relationships, so he’d never really known what it was like to have a mom who loved him unconditionally.

After a moment, he asked, “Need a shoulder to cry on?”

He just wanted to distract her and help her feel better.

But Alicia shot back, “Aren’t you worried I’ll get your clothes all wet with tears?”

Jason blinked, a little surprised. “Nah, it’s fine. If it gets dirty, I’ll just throw it in the wash.”

Alicia leaned her head on his shoulder and broke down, crying for real.

Having a shoulder to lean on right now was just what she needed.

With Alicia leaning against him, her warmth and her tears soaking his shoulder, Jason

stiffened.

His heart raced, and it felt like her tears were burning right through to his heart.

‘She actually leaned on my shoulder… Maybe I really do have a chance?’ Jason thought, hope flickering in his chest.

He didn’t move a muscle, just let Alicia cry it out against him, both of them silent.

After a few minutes, Alicia finally let it all out, all those bottled-up feelings.

She looked up at him, totally unashamed. “I’m done crying. Thanks for letting me use your shoulder.”

Jason gave her a gentle look. “No problem.”

Jason couldn’t even say when he first caught feelings for Alicia.

He honestly had no idea himself.

Back in school, Alicia was always butting heads with him because of Nicolas and the others.

She even beat him up once.

Back then, he was itching to fight her and win back some pride.

But before he ever got the chance, he had to leave the country.

After he went abroad, life got busy, and there weren’t many people from home who crossed his mind-but Alicia was definitely one of them.

Of all the girls he’d ever met, she stood out from the crowd-confident, radiant, fiercely loyal, and never afraid to be herself.

Back then, though, what he really looked forward to was coming back and testing his skills against her.

As he grew older and matured, the urge to fight her just faded away.

His brother’s death was a huge blow, and after the car accident left him unable to walk properly, he found himself drowning in hatred.

After he returned, he’d occasionally check up on her, just to see how she was doing.
