Brad turned away from me, his powerful frame rigid with wounded Alpha pride. He walked to the side table and poured himself a glass of water, downing it in one gulp. I could see him trying to mask his hurt behind that cold, controlled facade he wore so well.

I took a deep breath, trying to collect myself. “We need to talk. Really talk.”

A cold smile played at the corner of Brad’s mouth as he set the glass down with deliberate precision. Talk? Yes, we definitely need to have a good talk.

We both opened our mouths at the same time. ‘Did-‘

We stopped, staring at each other.

Again, we spoke in unison: “You go first.”

I shook my head in frustration. “Fine, Ill go first. Did you pressure the Blair family in business? Why would you do that?”

Brad’s Alpha presence exploded around him. “Why? You’re actually asking me why? Elle, are you treating me like I’m some kind of fool? How can you hurt

me like this?”

Brad grabbed the glass he’d just emptied and smashed it against the table. The crystal shattered into countless pieces, glass fragments scattering

pathetically across the surface.

I flinched. “I…”

But before I could finish, Brad stepped closer.

*I… what choice did I have?” My voice cracked with emotion. “Susan is my mother Could I just stand by and watch her die? Brad, tell me, what choice did I

have?*

“Yes, I lied to you. I didn’t tell you the truth. I didn’t tell you where I was going. hid from you when I made a deal with the Blair family. My words came faster now, desperate to make him understand. “But did you ever think about my situation?”

‘You want me to just ignore my Susan’s life? Is that even possible? You know better than anyone how much I suffered for her sake back then! You know

better than anyone what I sacrificed to escape the West family!”

I turned the tables on him, my own anger rising. ‘You’re accusing me now? Fine, accept it all! But can you explain to me why you pressured the Blair

family in business?

Brad s eyes blazed with fury, and I could see the hint of his fangs as his wolf side threatened to surface. ‘Explain? A guy who’s constantly trying to steal my

mate away from me why the hell would I let it exist!’

His amber eyes narrowed as he glared at me. “The Blair family that abandoned you are you really going to oppose me for them?”

His voice grew louder, becoming an Alpha’s roar. “Everything I did – who do you think it was for? For you! And yet you treat me like this!”

He saw the shame in my expression and suddenly couldn’t continue. Instead, hecked the chair next to him with such force that it flew through the air, hit

the wall, and shattered into pieces. I jumped, my eyes wide with alarm.

unleashed now.

‘I could do anything for you even if it meant to kill! His finger pointed at me, is eyes rimmed with red. ‘But what about you? Did you ever think that

what you’re doing might make all my efforts come to nothing? Make everything e worked for fall apart?”

‘Elle, when will you change this self-righteous nature of yours? You’re just a human woman all you need to do is tell me what you want!”

Suddenly, his expression changed to one of dark suspicion. “Elle, have you… have you fallen in love with another man? Are you in love with Raymond

Carter?

‘You’re talking nonsense!’ I shot back coldly.

“Then why didn’t you discuss it with me before running back to the Blair family? His pursuit was relentless.

His amber eyes bored into mine. “Going back to the Blair family means you’re the Blair family heir, which means you have to take on the marriage contract

between the Blair and Carter families, which means you have to leave me, which means you will marry Raymond! Elle, tell me why!”

I looked away, my voice quiet. I’ve never had feelings for Raymond.”

A flash of joy crossed Brad’s eyes at those words, but he quickly masked it.

‘I didn’t discuss it with you because this problem has no solution,’ I said, finally meeting his gaze again. “Even if I had talked to you about it, you still

couldn’t solve this dead end.”

I’ve already been to the Blair family’s alchemy laboratory. That place isn’t somewhere outsiders can enter. Only someone with Blair family blood recorded in

the DNA database can open the door to the alchemy lab.”

I challenged him back. “Do you think that by pressuring the Blair family in business, you can open that door? No, you can’t.”

“My Susan only has three months to live, maybe less. The longer we wait, the more her body deteriorates. She might die before this child is even born.”

“Brad, I really didn’t want to hurt you. Hurting you is like hurting myself! Besides hiding things from you, what else could I have done?”

Brad watched my emotional outburst, and slowly, the fight seemed to drain out of him. He closed his eyes softly.

“Fine,” he said, his voice deadly calm. “So tell me. What do we do now? Hmm? You are a Blair now. You’ve saved whoever you wanted to save. Why did you

come back this time? To break our mate bond?”

His amber eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the fear beneath his anger the terror that I might actually nod.

I sighed quietly. “Dakota is gone now. I’m all that’s left of the Blair family. Unless disown my parents and never see them again in this lifetime…”

Brad’s fury reignited. He lunged forward and grabbed my wrist.

‘Elle, let me make this clear to you today this isn’t going to be resolved so easi! I won’t let you go that easily. Want to break the mate bond? Hell no!’

He shoved me down onto the bed and strode toward the door.

‘As long as I don’t agree, you’ll remain as my mate. His laugh was cold and crue “We’ll see about that!”

He kicked the door open with tremendous force. ‘Elle, don’t let me see your face gain! I hate it most when people lie to me! Don’t think I can’t live without

you! I can pamper you, and I can just as easily abandon you!”
