Nathan was snapped out of his thoughts by a noise at the door. He quickly stopped what he was doing.

Turning around, he saw the doctor coming in. Nathan stood up, his expression calm and composed, and looked at the doctor.

The doctor, a little intimidated by Nathan’s presence, quickly explained, “I heard Ms. Lyons had woken up, so I came to check on her.”

Nathan nodded and stepped aside a bit.

Only then did the doctor hurry over to give Eliana a thorough check–up.

After the check–up, the doctor let out a sigh of relief and looked at Nathan. “Ms. Lyons is out of danger now. Her injuries will take some time to heal, but once they do, she’ll be fine.”

Remembering what he’d just seen when he entered, the doctor hesitated before adding, “Mr. Turner, Ms. Lyons still needs plenty of rest. Try to avoid any sudden movements so she doesn’t aggravate her injuries.”

“Got it.” He knew what the doctor was talking about, but Nathan didn’t really care and simply said so.

After the doctor left, Nathan was just about to see how Eliana was doing when he suddenly saw a pillow flying straight at him.

He quickly reached out and caught it in mid–air.

After tossing the pillow onto the couch, Nathan looked at Eliana seriously and said, “What’s wrong? Trying to take me out with a pillow? Are you plotting to murder your own man now?”

Eliana’s face was already burning up thanks to the doctor’s comments, but after Nathan’s teasing, her cheeks flushed even

more.

“Are you my man? Nathan, what are you even talking about?” Eliana shot back.

“Stop saying weird stuff and just leave. I don’t need you here,” she snapped.

“Just call my parents over instead,” she added.

As she spoke, her face got even hotter, and she couldn’t help but reach up to touch her cheek.

If this had happened before, seeing Eliana act like that might’ve actually bummed Nathan out. But after their recent close moment. And Eliana was not pushing him away. Nathan was feeling on top of the world.

Not fazed at all by Eliana’s pretend tough act, Nathan strolled right up to the bed, leaned in, and gave her a serious look. “What’s wrong? Embarrassed, huh?”

When Eliana went to swat at him again, Nathan quickly grabbed her hand, his tone turning serious. “Alright, I’ll stop messing with you. But you’re hurt, so you need to take it easy, okay?”

“Your mom already cried her eyes out when she saw you like this today. If you have her come back to watch over you, it’ll just break her heart all over again,” he said.

“Honestly, I’m the best one to stay with you. Sure, it hurts me to see you like this, but I’m good at handling this kind of thing, I can take it,” Nathan added.

Nathan said all this with a straight face, and this time, Eliana actually listened.

She lay there, not daring to move. She just turned her head and looked at Nathan, her tone serious. “Are my parents okay?”

Hearing Nathan mention her parents, Eliana’s face grew solemn.

She knew exactly how much her parents loved her, so she could imagine just how worried and heartbroken they’d be if they saw her all banged up like this.

Just thinking about it made Eliana’s heart ache.

With all that weighing on her mind, Eliana wasn’t in the mood to argue with Nathan anymore. She just looked at him seriously.

“Relax, I’ve got it covered,” Nathan said, sounding way more confident than he probably should, just to put Eliana at ease.

“When they arrived, you were already in surgery, so they didn’t really know how bad things were. They were just worried because of what happened to you,” he explained.

“So, honestly, it’s better not to have your parents here right now. It would be really hard on them,” Nathan added.

Hearing Nathan say all that, Eliana ended up agreeing with him.

She really didn’t want her parents to worry or feel sad, so she thought to herself, ‘Might as well just let Nathan stay with me instead.’

That thought made Eliana suddenly think of Irene. “Wait, why isn’t Irene here with me?”

“Is she okay? What happened to her?” Eliana asked, her voice anxious and full of concern.

Nathan was honestly at a loss with her.

Seeing how she worried about everyone, he said seriously, “I promise, Irene’s totally fine. She actually tried to argue with me about who should stay and look after you, but I told her this was my rare chance to tell you how I feel.”

“You know she’s always scheming to get us together, so of course she helped me out. Before she left, she made me promise to call her if anything happened,” Nathan explained.

“She’s doing great, I swear. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with her,” he added.

As Nathan spoke, he dragged a chair over and sat right next to the bed, giving Eliana a serious look. “But seriously, why are you always so hung up on Irene? Can’t you see this whole kidnapping was all about you?”

Eliana nodded. “I know, but that guy… He said some messed–up stuff about Irene…”

“He said a bunch of filthy things. I have no idea if any of it was true, but it freaked me out. Guys like that don’t have any limits.
