Unable to refuse her, the old man could only take her to the hospital.
Xinger bit her lip, holding the newly folded Thousand Paper Crane as she walked in. Seeing the crane that Luo Jun had left behind, leaning crookedly against the pillow, she stepped over and picked it up.
"Grandpa, Mo Mo hasn’t left, look, his paper crane is still here?"
The old man glanced at her thin profile, a look of pity flashing in his eyes, "Maybe, he... might have gone for a check-up."
"Can we wait for him for a while?" Xinger turned her face, asking earnestly.
"I’m sorry, Xinger." The old man shook his head gently, "Grandpa promised someone to return quickly, I’m afraid we can’t wait any longer."
The old man knew that Luo Jun had already left; the paper crane was just discarded here by him.
He was just reluctant to let the child down, so he told this lie.
"Then... can I leave the paper crane for Mo Mo?"
"Of course."
Xinger turned her face, carefully straightened the wings of the paper crane in her hand, and placed the newly folded crane alongside the old one before reluctantly returning to the old man’s side.
"Let’s go."
Holding her small hand, the old man glanced at the cranes placed together on the pillow, then turned and walked toward the door.
Xinger glanced back at those two cranes and finally followed the old man out.
Shortly after they left, the cleaner who came for the early shift walked in to clean the ward. She noticed the paper cranes on the pillow and casually picked them up, intending to throw them away.
"Don’t touch them, those are my paper cranes!"
Behind her came a child’s voice, tender yet commanding.
