Chapter 199
How was she supposed to respond to such a somber topic?
Before Louisa could think of something comforting to say, Nicholas brightened again. “The more I look at you, the more familiar you seem. How about becoming my little sister, Ms. Forbes?”
Louisa remained silent, thinking: Why not big sister instead? But she couldn’t actually say that to her boss’s friend.
She offered a polite smile instead. “Mr. Getty, you’re too kind.”
“What’s with the ‘Mr. Getty‘? Just call me by my name, or Nick, Nico, Nicky–whatever you want,” Nicholas insisted excitedly.
Julian was about to intervene, finding the whole scene irritating, when Louisa complied.
“…Nicholas,” she said simply.
There was no flattery or pretense in her voice–just a soft, slightly sweet utterance.
Nicholas seemed surprised by the effect it had on him. His voice trembled slightly. “Good girl. Say it again.”
“Are you done?” Julian kicked him.
Nicholas was delighted. “Don’t you think it sounds nice? My heart’s melting.”
He turned back to Louisa. “As your brother now, Louisa, promise me you’ll bring any potential boyfriends to me for approval. If they pass my inspection, I’ll have a gift ready for you.”
He spoke with genuine happiness.
Louisa couldn’t help but think this Nicholas wasn’t quite normal.
By the time they left the club, it was past nine in the evening.
Nicholas tried to persuade Julian and Louisa to visit his vineyard.
Julian refused. “Another time. We need to head back.”
“What’s the rush?” Nicholas threw an arm around his shoulders. “Julian, listen–the night is young! I can arrange a romantic date for you two, so you can…”

He gave them a suggestive smile.
“Thanks, but no,” Julian replied firmly.
“Come on, why so timid?” Nicholas pressed. “Deep feelings alone won’t win her heart–you need strategy! Send flowers, buy handbags, or just get her into bed. Don’t just give her that bundle of dried grass. What girl likes that anyway?”
“She’s not just any girl,” Julian responded.
Standing ahead of them, Louisa watched their intimate whispering and felt increasingly uncomfortable.

She’d already been forced to accept Nicholas as a “brother” tonight. Would she soon be expected to accept Julian as a sister–in–law? No, no
-she couldn’t handle that scenario.
Yet, watching the two men together, she couldn’t help but notice how affectionate they seemed. What was that about?
Despite Nicholas’s enthusiastic invitation, he couldn’t convince Julian to stay. They booked a night flight back to the city.
By the time they boarded, it was past eleven.
Louisa reclined her seat, planning to catch some sleep. After days of hard work and little rest, she was exhausted.
Yet sleep eluded her as she tossed and turned.
Julian watched her with amusement. “What’s wrong? Still hungry?”
“No.” She sat up. “I keep thinking about Mr. Getty’s story. From what you both said, they only found his mother’s body, not his sister’s. Is it possible the baby… actually survived?”
“Perhaps,” he replied indifferently.
His attitude dissatisfied her. Forgetting he was her boss, she launched into criticism, “How can you be so cold? And Nicholas–he claims to miss his sister, but he stopped looking when they couldn’t find her body? Is this what men call love–just empty words?”
Julian sighed, turning to face her with resignation. “You heard Nicholas tonight. The Getty family lives amid constant danger–one wrong move could be fatal. Even if he found his sister, he wouldn’t dare acknowledge her under those circumstances.”
Louisa’s indignation deflated. “Oh… I hadn’t considered that.”
“Now you see you’ve misjudged me?” Julian gave her a cool look. “Don’t you think you owe me compensation?”
Louisa wasn’t unreasonable. “Yes, I was wrong. I apologize.”
