Louisa was truly at her breaking point. She regretted everything–coming here tonight, entering his home,
and especially wandering into his study.
“What kind of hungry?” she asked, swallowing hard.
Julian, seeing her cautious expression, decided he shouldn’t tease her further or he might get himself into
trouble too.
“Stomach hungry,” he answered with mild exasperation. I want a late–night snack.”
With those words, Louisa’s tightly wound nerves finally relaxed. She laughed awkwardly, “You should have
said so! I’ll make you something.”
“Are you sure your cooking skills are… adequate?” Julian questioned.
Louisa deflated. “What do you want then?”
Julian released her and stood up, guiding her to sit in his place. “I’ll cook. There are two documents left-
can you review them for me?”
“No problem,” she agreed readily.
After he left with a small disapproving sound, Louisa finally exhaled deeply.
She really shouldn’t have come tonight, but there was no turning back now. She steadied herself and
dutifully got to work on his documents.
Since it was already evening, Julian kept the late snack simple. He prepared a fresh vegetable salad with
pan–seared salmon–nutritious without too many calories.
By the time he finished, Louisa had completed the work and emerged from the study. The air between
them was thick with awkward tension from their earlier encounter.
Louisa deployed her survival strategy–head down, focus on food.
“Coward,” Julian laughed softly as he sat across from her, watching her fluffy–haired head bent over her
plate.

Louisa didn’t dare make a sound.

Julian placed a cup of orange juice beside her. “Drink this.”
“Okay.” She grabbed it and drank without hesitation, downing it in one go.
“Why are you eating so fast?” Julian asked in a deliberately measured tone. “You didn’t even check it first.
What if I’d drugged you?”
Louisa froze. She looked at him and eventually managed to say, “You wouldn’t do something like that; I
trust you.”
“That’s debatable,” Julian replied.
Watching him eat with elegant movements, acting as though nothing unusual had happened, she gradually
relaxed. His earlier comment must have been just to scare her.
What she didn’t know was that he had indeed put something in the drink–but only a digestive aid for
stomach health.
As soon as he finished eating, she jumped up to clear the dishes.
“Go to my study and find a book for me,” Julian instructed. “Norwegian Wood.“”
“Got it.” She obediently complied.
When she returned, Julian had already cleaned the table. Since there weren’t many dishes, he hadn’t used
the dishwasher but was washing them by hand at the sink.
This was the first time Louisa had seen him like this–s tall, elegant figure with sleeves rolled up, forearms under the running water, moving with practiced ease. He looked graceful, composed, and
surprisingly domestic.
She couldn’t help remembering her time with George. the early days of their marriage, they had been inseparable. When she cooked or washed dishes, he would always hold her from behind, being affectionate
in various ways.
Looking back now, George, that rich man’s son, had never once set foot in the kitchen, let alone helped with household chores. She had assumed all sons from wealthy families were like that.

Yet here was Julian, heir to an elite family fortune and CEO of the Tudor Group, doing these everyday tasks
without looking out of place–as if this was simply part of normal life.
She found herself staring again, lost in thought until the crisp sound of dishes being stacked snapped her
back to reality.
Seeing Julian bent over, putting the clean dishes away, she hurriedly lowered her head and pretended to be
absorbed in the book, randomly opening to a page.
Julian came over with two glasses of water, casually placing them on the coffee table as he sat beside her.
“Ms. Forbes, I believe that’s the book I requested,” he said, his lips curved slightly upward.
His warm, pleasant voice came from very close to her ear, his breath tickling her skin. She jerked as if
burned and quickly placed the book on his lap. “Here you go.”
“That wouldn’t be fair,” Julian didn’t take it. “How could I deprive you of the pleasure of reading?”
Louisa remained silent. What exactly did Julian want?
“I’m tired,” he said in a lazy tone, returning the book to her. “Read it to me.”
Louisa said nothing. Fine. He was the boss, after all. After he’d cooked and cleaned, she could hardly
refuse.
The night was serene. Outside the window stretched a long river, its surface glimmering with the dazzling colors of neon lights, bathed in the hazy glow of moonlight as it flowed steadily eastward.
Inside the room, all was quiet except for the sound of turning pages and her soft, gentle voice flowing
through the darkness.
“I don’t know if what I did was right–even today, twenty years later, I still don’t know, and perhaps never will. But at that moment, I had no choice. She was emotionally distraught, confused, seeking comfort from
me, I…”
Her voice suddenly stopped.
“And then?” Julian’s low, slightly husky voice sounded right beside her ear.
Louisa didn’t dare turn around. Her cheeks flushed–she couldn’t possibly read what came next.

She quickly flipped to another page, pretending nothing had happened. “Dawn broke…” she continued with
forced composure.
Julian laughed softly. “The night hasn’t even passed yet how did dawn break already? Is this how you will
tell bedtime stories to your children in the future?”
Louisa had just reached for her glass to take a calming sip when his last comment made her choke and
splutter, droplets landing on her bare legs.
Julian pulled out a couple of tissues and wiped her mouth, his tone deceptively casual. “It’s just a book.
Why so excited?”
Louisa remained silent. She suspected he knew exactly what came next in that passage.
But Julian maintained his innocent facade as he used the tissue to wipe the water from her legs. His deep
eyes met hers again. “Turn back to where you were. Continue reading.”
