Tears welled in Becky’s eyes as she stared at Louisa for a long moment, then shook her head frantically. “That’s impossible. Vivian’s family

is loaded. We can’t fight someone like her.”

“How will you know if you don’t try?” Sadie countered. “If we fail, that’s on us. But if we win, you can start a whole new life.”

Becky gazed at her with bewildered eyes.

Louisa decided to be more direct. “I heard you were a top student in school–the smart one in your class. You shouldn’t be living like

this.”

She softened her voice. “I can pay to have your face reconstructed. I can even fund your education abroad. Your life is still long–you don’t

need to hide away forever. You can start fresh.”

Becky’s eyes widened in disbelief, her breathing quickening. Could she really start over?

She looked around the small, dilapidated house. “Yeah, what could be worse than being trapped here?” With that thought, she seemed to make up her mind, her gaze hardening with resolve. “What do you need me to do? Just tell me.”

Louisa and Sadie exchanged victorious smiles. They’d finally convinced her.

In the dining room, Noah lounged in a chair, lazily chewing gum as he sent the conversation he’d just recorded to Julian.

Meanwhile, Julian, who was on the road, listened to Noah’s recording. His expression grew thoughtful. A moment later, he texted Noah: [Becky’s not telling the whole truth. Keep an eye on her.]

Noah frowned. Not telling the truth? He thought Becky seemed genuine. She’d cried so miserably, so pitifully–those emotions couldn’t be fake. Was Julian being paranoid again? The boss was always suspicious. But Noah wouldn’t dare say that out loud. He simply replied: [OK!]

Back in the living room, they were getting to the point.

“Becky, are you a local from Virella Highlands?” Louisa asked.

Becky nodded. “Yes.” She couldn’t figure out why Louisa was asking.

“Then do you know of any place around here that has flowers, grass, a pond, a small cabin, and a little hill?”

Becky murmured to herself: “Flowers, grass, a pond, a cabin, a hill…”

“You remember it, don’t you?” Louisa pressed.

Becky’s eyes grew moist. “This place… it sounds like our countryside.”

“Are you sure?” Sadie asked.

Becky nodded. “I’m certain. It’s near my grandmother’s house. Why don’t I take you there? My grandmother might know the exact spot, or

we could look around ourselves.”

Louisa exchanged a glance with Sadie, then nodded. They decided to leave immediately.

Becky went to her room to change clothes. Noah headed to the bathroom. Jacob, who couldn’t stand the smell in the house anymore, bolted outside. He was finally escaping this awful place–he couldn’t bear another minute.

Sadie followed him out, watching her brother’s pathetic display. “Seriously? You’re going to puke over a little smell? Such a princess. Look

at Noah–he’s totally chill.”

Jacob was too busy dry–heaving to respond.

Louisa didn’t immediately go outside. Now she had time to consider the smell permeating the house, which was truly unbearable. Her footsteps halted at the spot where the odor was strongest–outside a closed door. The smell was emanating from this room.

Fighting the nausea churning in her stomach, Louisa reached for the doorknob, intending to look inside. Just then, a hand reached out to

stop her.

It was Noah.

Louisa gave him a curious look.

“It’s disgusting in there,” Noah said. “Don’t look–you’ll throw up.”

“You’ve seen it?” Louisa asked.

Noah nodded, putting an arm around her shoulders to guide her outside. He lowered his voice: “It’s a cat. Been dead for days, and they haven’t dealt with it. No wonder it reeks.”

“Are you sure it’s a cat? Don’t lie to me!” Louisa warned.

Noah laughed. “You almost sound disappointed. Were you hoping it was a person?”

Louisa shot him a withering look. “Disappointed? I just don’t want you misleading me. It would affect my judgment.” She lowered her voice. “For some reason, I feel like Becky isn’t being honest. Or at least, she’s not telling us everything. She’s hiding something.”

Noah gave her a shocked look. How was she saying the exact same thing as his boss? Were Julian and Louisa both this suspicious?

But Becky emerged from her house then, cutting their conversation short. She’d changed into a yellow dress, wearing a hat and mask that covered her face completely, leaving only her eyes visible. “Let’s go,” she said.

The group headed downstairs together.

The road to the countryside wasn’t smooth, with many paths cutting through fields. Noah took the driver’s seat, relegating Jacob to the passenger side. The three women sat in the back.

Becky pulled up directions to her grandmother’s house. Sadie put on her headphones. Louisa took out her phone to text Hazel, asking her to find out if the Price family had any old houses in the countryside around Virella Highlands.

As they drove, Louisa noticed the beautiful scenery along the rural roads. She saw several ponds, flowers, trees, and plants. The fields weren’t completely flat either–small hills appeared here and there.

The place Vivian had described was real. The problem was, places matching Vivian’s description were everywhere. Louisa realized finding the exact location would be more difficult than expected. That’s why she’d asked Hazel to investigate.

Even through the screen, Louisa could sense Hazel’s eagerness. Hadn’t Hazel once treasured Vivian? Now she treated her like poison. People always have to pay for their mistakes.

Beside her, Sadie seemed to hear that silent sigh and leaned close to whisper in Louisa’s ear: “Don’t worry, they’re already here.”

“They” referred to Vivian and her mother, Lily. Even if they couldn’t find the place, Vivian and her mother would lead the way.

Louisa’s eyes brightened. Everything was proceeding according to plan. And yet, with things going so smoothly, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
