Chapter 120 Unspoken Feelings
Iris followed the police to sign some papers.
Just then, one of the women nearby spoke up. “She gets to leave. When do we?”
The police said, “Forget leaving. Call your family to bring you a change of clothes.”
His words set the women off. They snapped at him, demanding to know why.
One woman accused Iris of destroying her brother’s family. She shouted at the police, demanding to know why Iris wasn’t in jail.
Iris finished signing and looked up at the woman who’d badmouthed her. Her gentle eyes held a tough, unyielding glint.
The police had seen it all. He could tell Iris wasn’t the kind to have no principles or roll over easily.
He quickly snapped at the woman, “Shut up, Causing a public disturbance gets you five days in jail max and’a two or three hundred dollar fine. But if she sues you for slander or insult, you’ll be locked up for two or three years.”
The woman who’d been running her mouth clammed up instantly, scared stiff.
Iris walked out of the police station.
She saw Julian standing in front of the door, on the phone. Staring at his back, her mood dropped a little. Julian turned, his eyes locking on her face.
He said a quick couple of words, hung up, and strode over.
“Emily’s been trashing you online for a long time. Why didn’t you do anything? Why didn’t you tell me?”
His gentle tone had a faint edge of scolding.
Iris’s already low mood soured more. “What was I supposed to do? Argue with her? Fight her? Ask Ethan to beat her up? Sue her?”
If she’d had any other option, things wouldn’t have gotten this bad.
Julian’s eyes dimmed with disappointment. “Did you ever even think to ask me for help?”
“Could I ask you?” Iris said bitterly.
Julian heard the unspoken hurt in her words.
He looked away, took a deep breath, and fell silent for a beat. Then he turned back to her. “It’s my fault I pulled away after we got married. But every time you were in trouble, did I ever turn you down? Did I ever say no to anything you wanted?”
Iris had no words.

She couldn’t argue with that.
It was true. Other than not being intimate with her, coming home late, and having his share of gossip, Julian had no real flaws.
Whenever she’d asked him for something-whether a favor or a gift-he’d always said yes.
But he was so distant. How could she ever have the courage to ask him for help?
Iris fell quiet. Julian saw her hesitation and softened, his tone turning gentle again. “I know you can’t handle Emily. I also know you don’t want to put Ethan in a bind. I already fixed it.”
Iris tensed. “Did you get a lawyer to sue her?”
“That would put Ethan in a bind, right?”
“Yeah. So I didn’t sue her.”
“I asked someone to shut down her account and blacklist her on all the big platforms.”
“Thank you.” Iris sighed in relief. Having money, power and connections really helped.
A problem that felt hopeless to her was nothing more than a phone call for Julian.
“Let’s go home.” Julian took her hand.
Iris pulled back hard, slipping out of his warm palm.
Julian froze. His eyes flicked to her hand, disappointment flashing across his face. His fingers curled into a fist.
Iris wasn’t being difficult.
The divorce was already moving forward. She didn’t want any emotional ties with Julian anymore.
Right now, she needed to let go of the marriage and of him, and sever the last traces of her lingering feelings.
“I’m going back to the research institute.”
Julian frowned. “It’s on my way.”
Iris made up an excuse, just to avoid riding with him. “It’s rush hour. The subway will be faster.”
Julian checked his watch. It was already four thirty. “It’s almost quitting time. Why go back?”
“Overtime.”
“You’ve been working overtime for days. Are you avoiding me?”.
“No.”

“Look at me when you say that.”
Iris looked up, her gaze calm-a sharp contrast to Julian’s intense eyes.
Their eyes met. Iris stared at him, her face calm but her heart racing.
Claiming she didn’t love him was nothing but a lie.
Only she knew she still had feelings for him.
