Chapter 122 Unspoken Tension
The women nodded, smiling warmly.
Beatrice beamed. “You’re back! Have you had dinner yet?”
Julian said, “Not yet.”
Beatrice said, “Then go eat quickly. It’s in the backyard. We just finished up.”
“Okay” Julian politely said goodbye to the other relatives, still holding Iris’s hand as they turned to leave.
Voices drifted over from behind.
“Iris is so pretty! She and Julian are perfect together-total couple goals!”
“Totally!”
“Got any kids yet?”
“Not yet. Young people don’t rush into having kids these days.”
Iris let out a long sigh of relief.
The backyard held an outdoor buffet, brightly lit and full of life.
More people were here than in the living room. Small groups were chatting and clinking glasses.
Julian didn’t take her to greet his relatives. He headed straight for the food table and handed her a plate.
“Eat something first. We’ll be busy later.”
Iris took the plate, glanced at the spread of food, and picked out her favorites. “What do we have to do later?
Julian picked up a glass of warm water and took a sip. “My family’s pretty traditional. Lots of little rituals. I’m not sure exactly what we need to do, but Grandma will show you.”
“Show me? Why?”
*Traditions get passed down. She doesn’t want us to be clueless and unprepared when our daughter gets married someday.
Iris’s hand froze mid reach, halfway to grabbing more food.
Julian caught her reaction, a flash of disappointment crossing his face.
Tris set down her fork, holding her plate and looking at him, her mood low. She changed the subject. “Aren’t you eating?”
Julian finished his water, set the glass down, and grabbed a clean plate. “I’ll have a little.”
Iris waited for hum to load his plate and then they sat down at a table together.
Chapter 122 Unspoken Tension
At a big family party like this, Iris always felt uneasy. She was introverted and bad at small talk. With so many people around, she felt lost, nervous and on edge.
Having Julian next to her made it easier-less scary.
They ate quietly, totally out of step with the noisy, lively crowd around them.
“Iris.” A soft voice called her name.
Iris and Julian both looked up, toward the sound.
Caleb held a wine glass, sauntering over with a lazy, playful look. He pulled out the chair next to Iris and plopped down.
He smiled, his eyes fixed on Iris.
Julian set down his knife and fork, and picked up a napkin to wipe his mouth. His face went cold and dark.
Iris kept a polite smile, greeting him nicely. “Caleb.”
Caleb replied in a sweet, singsong tone, “Hey there.”
He propped his elbow on the table, chin in his hand, and glanced at Julian. “Julian, Mom said Iris filed for divorce. Is that for real?”
Iris’s hand froze. She looked at Caleb, confused.
Besides her and Julian, only Zoe knew about their divorce.
How did they find out?
Julian’s face turned bright red with anger. He glared at Caleb sharply, not saying a word.
Caleb felt a chill down his spine under that stare. He forced himself to stay calm, raising an eyebrow. He turned back to Iris. “You’re brave. When you’re up against someone who’s mean, you gotta use the law. If you need help, just say the word. I’ll back you up.”
Julian’s hand on the table curled into a fist, his knuckles whitening as the veins popped out.
A cold, dangerous vibe filled the air, making the mood tight..
He spoke slowly, his voice icy. “If you don’t wanna die, get lost.”
Caleb swallowed hard, standing up. He tried to act tough, teasing. “Good luck with the divorce, you two.
With that, he stuffed his hands in his pockets, whistled a cheery tune, and strolled away like nothing happened.
Iris looked at Julian.
She’d never seen him this angry-
so dangerous, so sharp. His vibe scared her.

Chapter 122 Unspoken Tension
“I didn’t tell anyone about this,” Iris explained, anxious.
“I know.” Julian stood up and walked off.
Iris felt a hollow ache in her chest. Her eyes followed his back.
She worried he’d ignore her again at this party.
