Chapter 124 A Bold Stand

“Looks like you really had no clue.” Frederick smirked, shaking his head with a sigh. He stood up, sauntered to the bar, and poured a glass of liquor slowly. “The day Lily tried to kill herself, I gave him two options. Divorce you and get with Lily, or quit the Everhart Group and give up all his inheritance.”

Iris’s heart twinged, a dull ache settling in. She froze, rooted to the spot.

Frederick took a sip of his drink, then sank back down on the sofa. “He picked the second one.”

Iris’s chest felt tight, like she couldn’t catch her breath. Her eyes teared up.

It had been a while since Lily’s suicide attempt, and she had no idea Julian had left the Everhart Group.

That made sense now-why Selena hadn’t dropped their contract with Everhart Group. Julian hadn’t lied to her. He just didn’t have the power to handle Selena’s business anymore.

Iris took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm. “I remember Everhart Group was just so-so before he took over. It got this big and strong because of him. You and the other big shareholders ganged up to push him out… it’s your loss. Now he’s got more time for his own company, Veritas Pharmaceuticals. I bet he’ll make Veritas bigger than Everhart Group someday.”

Frederick scoffed. “Cocky. You’re just like my dumb son, acting like you’re untouchable.“

Iris had always been confident in herself.

Right then, she believed in Julian too. She spoke steadily. “If you let Caleb run the company, you’ll regret

it.”

With that, Iris grabbed her phone and stood up. “If that’s all, I’m out of here.”

“Aren’t you scared I’ll let those monkeys go?”

“I am.” Iris pressed her lips together, a bitter look crossing her face. Her eyes were full of disgust. “That’s why I agreed to divorce Julian. But if you get greedy and try to steal my unfinished drug formula, forget it. I won’t let that happen.”

Frederick stood up too, leaning in to threaten her. “Have you thought about what happens if the virus from those monkeys gets out?”

Of course she had. If the virus spread and hurt people, she’d end up in jail.

Iris kept a straight face, her voice hard as steel. “I want those monkeys back in my lab safe and sound before the divorce trial. If not, I’m not divorcing him.”

Frederick’s face darkened, shocked and furious. “Who do you think you are, threatening me?

Iris threw caution to the wind. “I’m still your son’s wife, aren’t I? If you keep playing dirty, I won’t just stay married to Julian-I’ll have his kid. I’d love to see how your fancy family deals with having a criminal around. And your grandson will have a mom behind bars. That stain will stick to your family forever.”

Frederick’s hands shook with rage. His face twisted into a scowl, veins popping on his forehead again.

He was used to being in charge and used to people fearing him. But this quiet, gentle woman had him so mad he could blow a fuse.

He was left tongue-tied, grinding his teeth in anger.

Iris stayed calm. “Divorce is my greatest compromise. Take it and stop being greedy. Push me too far, and we’ll both lose. No one comes out on top.”

With that, Iris walked out of the study.

As she closed the door behind her, she heard a glass shatter inside. Frederick’s fury was so loud that she could feel it through the door.

Iris walked down the hallway, hitting the power button on her phone as she went.

It beeped a few times before turning on.

She opened her messages and saw two missed calls from Julian.

She squeezed the phone tight, her mood low and heavy. She took a deep breath and kept walking.

As she passed the side hall, Beatrice waved her over. “Iris, come here.”

Iris forced a smile and headed over.

Beatrice asked, “You eat dinner yet?”

Iris nodded. “Yeah, Grandma.”
