Maybe something she said ticked Julian off. His face went cold, his eyes dark and sharp. He stood up, headed for the dining room, and called over his shoulder. “No vacation.”

Beatrice jumped to her feet, staring at his back. “Everyone in the country’s off work. Why are you the only one with no vacation? Even the president isn’t this busy.”

Julian sat down at the dining table. “May, did you get breakfast ready?”

“Yeah…” May called from the kitchen.

Iris saw this coming. She’d braced herself for it.

But seeing how cold he was, a faint sadness still welled up in her heart.

Iris didn’t want Beatrice to get upset. She also didn’t want to put Julian on the the lab’s project is entering clinical trials. I’m pretty busy too.”

Beatrice sat down, annoyed. “You’re just too nice. You let him walk all over you.”

“It’s not that,” Iris said. “I really am swamped these days.”

Beatrice sighed, worry written all over her face. “How long have you been married? Even old couples who’ve been together 60 years aren’t this cold. I guess I’ll never hold a great–grandkid, huh?”

“Don’t be so sure.” A voice came from upstairs. It was Caleb, teasing. “Grandma, maybe I can make that wish come true for you.”

Caleb was dressed in all black, looking cool. He walked down the stairs fast, sat next to Iris, and propped his chin in one hand. His eyes were warm and bright, a big smile on his face. “Morning, Iris!”

Iris shifted a little in her seat. “Morning.”

Beatrice’s face turned serious. She patted the seat next to her. “Caleb, come sit by me.”

Caleb glanced at Julian at the dining table, then looked at Beatrice, grinning. “I’m not gonna anything to her. What are you so worried about?”

Beatrice frowned. “That’s no way to talk. Show some respect.”

Caleb ignored her. His eyes stayed on Iris, his voice soft. “Iris, it’s a holiday. You can put work aside. I’ll take you to see the Northern Lights.”

Chapter 31 The Secret Wish

Iris froze. That hit the softest part of her heart, and she went blank.

How does he know this is the place I’ve always wanted to go?

I’ve never told anyone about this childhood wish.

Is this really just a coincidence?

A strange, uneasy feeling washed over her. She hated that feeling–like someone could see right through her. And that someone was her husband’s brother.

“I don’t want to go,” Iris said flatly.

Caleb looked confident. “C’mon, you know you do.”

Iris sighed in frustration. She ignored him, stood up, and said goodbye to Beatrice. “Grandma, I still have work at the research institute. I’m heading out now.”

Beatrice saw right through Caleb. She knew he had a thing for Iris. But she was too old to stop the young from doing what they wanted.

“Go on then. Let Julian take you.”

“No, thanks.” Iris turned her down. She picked up her bag and headed for the door.

Caleb bit his lower lip, thought for a second, then stood up and followed her out.

When May brought breakfast out, Julian suddenly stood up. His chair scraped loudly against the floor. He hurried after them.

“Julian, aren’t you gonna eat?” May called.

Julian didn’t answer.

He caught up to Caleb at the door and grabbed his arm hard.

Caleb stumbled, turned around, and saw Julian. He smirked. “What’s your problem now?”

Julian’s eyes were icy, his voice serious. “You looking for a fight?”

Caleb knew he couldn’t beat Julian. He was a little scared deep down. He shrugged, held up his hands, and talked like a troublemaker. “What did I do? It’s a vacation. I just wanted to ask Iris to travel. You can come too. Bring the whole family. We can all go see the Northern Lights together.”

Julian’s eyes got darker. Cold anger washed over him. He grabbed Caleb by the collar, pulled him close, and spoke through gritted teeth coldly. “Did you go through my stuff?”
