Veins bulged on Simon’s forehead. He lay motionless on the ground, closing his eyes and taking slow, deep breaths.

The ambulance arrived, and the medics lifted Simon onto a stretcher.

Inside the moving ambulance, Daniel spoke to him. “Mr. Ellison, take good care of yourself in the hospital. Eat well and rest up. I’ll cover every single medical expense. And you’d better stay in shape too. I plan to pay your second installment of interest next month.”

The sky was clear and cloudless, the weather bright and beautiful.

A furious roar burst out from the ambulance. “You freak… you’re insane. As soon as I get better, you’re the first one I’ll take down.”

Daniel let out a cold scoff. “Do you even have working hands or feet to come after me?”

After leaving the hospital, Zoe nodded at Daniel to thank him. Tears glistened in her eyes, pure gratitude shining through.

“I’ll pay you back slowly. Every cent for his medical bills and the interest fees.”

Daniel shook his head. “There’s no rush. This is only the beginning. If you cut ties with me this early, your dad will only get bolder once he finds out.”

Zoe frowned. “You mean I have to let you step in again next time?”

“Exactly.” His tone was calm and firm. “He dares to lay a hand on you, but he’d never dare touch me. We need him to be truly terrified. Make him too scared to beg you for money. Make him avoid you like the plague, wishing he’d never have to see you again.

“He’ll even fear the fact that you’re paying off his debts, like it’s a death sentence for him. That

way,

he’ll vanish from your life for good. Though I can’t guarantee he’ll ever quit gambling.”

Worry crept into Zoe’s voice. “What if one day he gets beaten so badly he can’t move anymore?”

“Then you can send him to a nursing home. Give him a peaceful place to spend his remaining years.” Daniel paused for a second before adding, “Or we can leave him in your brother’s care once he gets out of prison.”

It was then that Zoe remembered the task Griffin had given her.

She was supposed to convince Brandon to drop the lawsuit.

She was basically being thrown straight into the fire.

“I can get by fine without a man.” A faint, sad glint flashed in her eyes as she spoke. “We’re not right for each other. Staying together would only lead to regret.”

Daniel slowly moved closer, lowering his gaze to study her pretty face. His voice dropped to a husky murmur. “Are you really set on never marrying or having kids?”

“My mind hasn’t changed. I’m never getting married.” Zoe thought for a moment and continued. “Once I’m financially free someday, I want to have a baby through artificial insemination.”

A playful smirk tugged at Daniel’s lips. “I’ve got good genes. You can pick me. Save money and skip all the pain.”

Zoe rolled her eyes at him and turned to walk away.

Daniel smiled faintly and hurried to catch up with her.

Zoe took the menu, skimmed through it, and picked an affordable set meal.

Zoe was caught off guard and accepted the gift with both hands. “Thank you. I’m so sorry… I didn’t prepare anything for you.”

Yvette smiled softly. “It’s fine. I’m the one taking up your time. Getting to meet you is the best gift for me.”

Zoe let out a quiet breath and opened the box. The beautiful silk scarf inside touched her heart deeply.

“I love it. Thank you so much.” She thanked Yvette again and then placed the gift into her bag. She rummaged through her own belongings, but there was nothing decent she could give in

return.

“Ms. Ellison, I know your time is precious, so I’ll cut to the chase.” Yvette looked nervous, her tone urgent and sincere. “Could you give Brandon a chance? He truly loves you. He only agreed to try dating me to avoid Mr. Whitmore’s marriage pressure. There’s nothing between us. He’s been waiting for you.”
