Yvette froze, her eyes going wide.

His voice came out low and groggy against her forehead, thick with sleep. “It’s too early. Stay a little longer.”

“I need to pee.”

Brandon hesitated briefly before letting her go.

Yvette got up, freshened up in the bathroom, and stepped back out.

Brandon was awake by then too.

He headed for the bathroom, so Yvette quickly ducked into the walk–in closet to avoid him.

She picked out a simple silk dress and brushed her hair in front of the full–length mirror. She looked worn out, drained of all energy.

Brandon finished up in the bathroom and paused at the closet doorway. He leaned against the frame, his eyes fixed steadily on her.

Yvette caught his gaze in the mirror but ignored him. She tucked a pearl clip into her hair.

Her phone buzzed repeatedly. She pulled it out and opened WhatsApp.

Riley had sent a food photo with a message, “It looks decent but tastes bland. I really crave food back home.”

Yvette lowered her head to type a reply. Out of nowhere, warm breath washed over her back.

Brandon had snuck up on her. He pressed one palm flat against the mirror, trapping her in place between his arm and the glass.

His woody cologne mixed with his fresh post–shower scent. The faint warmth tickled her neck. and her grip on her phone tightened.

“Who’s this?” he murmured, his breath brushing her ear.

Brandon slid his fingers over hers, gently taking her phone. He glanced at the cartoon avatar and the single name: Ray.

“Just a friend,” Yvette mumbled, her eyes glued to her phone.

He hooked a finger under her chin and turned her face back to him.

Brandon went stiff, his eyes darkening instantly.

Yvette felt a sharp twinge of hurt.

He’d been cold and distant the whole month ever since he found her birth control pills. No explanation, no apology. Now he suddenly acted clingy out of the blue.

She refused to give in to him.
