She looked up at her husband. A visible vein pulsed along his tight jaw–the telltale sign that Brandon was holding back his anger.
“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, her voice barely audible.
Brandon took a deep breath and turned toward the stairs.
“Put the plate in the dishwasher when you’re done. The maid will clean it up tomorrow.” His footsteps echoed heavily through the empty villa.
Yvette stared at the untouched pasta. She suddenly lost every bit of her appetite.
She forced herself to eat mechanically, unable to taste anything. Tears pooled in her eyes.
His words kept replaying in her head. “I love you. Do you believe me?”
It was not that she refused to believe him. She was just too scared to.
After finishing her late–night meal, Yvette put the dishes away and headed upstairs. The master bedroom was dark.
She pushed the door open quietly. Moonlight spilled into the room. Brandon lay on one side of the big bed, his back facing her, leaving her usual spot empty.
She held her breath and carefully slipped into bed, trying not to make a single sound.
An invisible gap stretched between them, wide and impossible to cross.
Yvette stared at the ceiling, listening to his steady breathing.
After a long while, she tilted her head slightly to look at his back.
Brandon always slept straight. But tonight, he curled up on his side, looking like a vulnerable child who lacked security.
Her heart twisted sharply at the sight.
She shifted gently and accidentally brushed his hand.
His body tensed instantly.

In the next second, Brandon gripped her hand tight. He rolled over and pulled her firmly into his arms with one strong arm.
Yvette gasped, firmly pinned against his scorching chest.
“Brandon…” she whispered, her voice trembling from shock.
In the darkness, she heard him take a deep breath, followed by a quiet sigh.
“Don’t move.” His voice was rough. “Just… let me hold you for a bit.”
Yvette froze completely.
His heart thudded fast and hard through her flimsy nightgown.
His arms wrapped around her like iron bands, yet he carefully avoided the faint red marks on her wrist.
“I’m still so mad,” he murmured after a long silence, his warm breath brushing her ear. “You honestly thought I was faking it this entire time.”
His tone was low and strained. “I’ve done everything to show you I love you, and ignored it all.”
Yvette’s heart skipped a beat. “But what about Zoe?”

“I’ve never cooked a single meal for Zoe, nor sent her a single bouquet of flowers. I never text or call her every day, never pick her up to and from work rain or shine, never take her out to have fun on my days off or buy her the fanciest, finest jewelry.
“I never spend every day figuring out ways to cheer her up and make her happy. I even felt no desire toward her.”
Yvette’s chest fluttered, and her eyes stung with fresh tears.
Every sweet thing he’d listed–every single thing he’d never done for Zoe–he had done for her, and more.
A rare vulnerability laced his voice. “Saying all this now makes me look pathetic.”
Yvette relaxed and melted into his embrace. “What about the bracelet?”
He held her tighter. “I tossed it randomly in a drawer and forgot it existed.

“You can get mad over that bracelet. You can even demand a divorce because of it. Just don’t leave me for any other reason.”
His voice cracked. A warm tear dropped onto the back of her neck.
Brandon is crying?
The realization sent a sharp jolt through her.
This mature, calm, composed man was crying because of her.
“I’m sorry…” She turned in his arms, touching his face blindly in the dark. Her fingers brushed wet tears on his cheeks. “I’m so sorry, Brandon. I was just too cowardly to believe you could love me.”
Brandon grabbed her hand and pressed it against his chest. He leaned down and kissed her forehead softly.
Yvette finally broke down. Curled up in his arms, she sobbed like a lost child who had finally found her way home.
“I was scared…”
Brandon held her tightly, their body heat mixing together. He rolled over and pinned her gently beneath him. His lips found hers in the dark.
This kiss was nothing like his usual soft tenderness. It was desperate, rough, and intense.
When he finally pulled away, both of them were breathless.
“Listen to me.” His voice was husky with raw desire. “It’s always been you, Yvette. No Zoe, no other women.”
Yvette nodded in the dark. Realizing he could not see her, she whispered, “I know…”
Brandon let out a long breath and pulled her back into his arms.
Yvette hugged him tightly. For the first time, she felt the cold wall between them starting to crumble away.
His heartbeat slowed gradually, and his breathing turned soft and steady.
Just as she thought he had fallen asleep, his quiet voice broke the silence.
