Emily forced a soft smile and coaxed him softly in a warm voice, “Frank, don’t be scared. Mommy messed up. Mommy won’t hit you again.”

But Frank was still petrified. When he saw Iris by the bed, he climbed up and threw himself into her arms. “Auntie, save me.”
Tears welled up in Iris’s eyes. For Frank’s future, his physical and mental well–being right now, and to help him get over the fear fast, she held back her anger at Emily. She patted Frank’s shoulders and whispered, “Frank, don’t be scared. Your mom didn’t mean to. She…”
Emily wasn’t thankful that Iris was sticking up for her. Instead, she got mad. She grabbed Frank’s unhurt hand and tugged him out of Iris’s arms.
Frank started screaming and crying, terrified and thrashing around. Doctors and nurses ran
over.
Ethan pulled Emily off him.
Iris hurried to hug Frank, calming his terrified nerves nonstop.
The doctor walked in, saw the mess, and snapped, “The kid just had surgery. Let him rest! One of you stay to watch him. The rest get out.”
Emily patted her chest fast. “I’m his mom. Let me stay and take care of him.”
Frank cried even harder, tears pouring down his face. He shook with fear in Iris’s arms. “I don’t want Mommy! Mommy hits me! I want Auntie! I want Auntie…”
Emily started crying, hurt and jealous, holding back her rage. “Frank, I’m your mom.”
The doctor was a reasonable guy. He could tell right away how the kid got hurt. He softened his voice. “Alright, you two go home. Let his aunt stay with him. He needs to stay calm to get better.”
Ethan looked at Iris with guilt. “Iris, can you please take care of him?”
Iris smiled softly. “Okay. You and Emily go home to rest. I’ll take care of Frank.”
Ethan turned around, grabbed Emily’s arm, and dragged her toward the door.
Emily grumbled insults as she walked. “Ingrates! Both of you are ingrates! I gave birth to him, and he’s just as bad. He’d rather have an outsider than his own mom. I wasted my time having him.”

“You’re on your phone all day watching videos. My parents were the ones taking care of him. Now you whine he doesn’t like you? Have you no shame?”
“Shame? I carried him for ten months and gave birth to him!”
Their yelling faded down the hallway.
Iris stroked Frank’s head gently, wiped his tears, and laid him down on the bed.
Frank held onto Iris’s clothes with his unhurt hand. His big eyes glistened with tears, filled with fear. “Auntie, don’t leave. I’m so scared.”
“I won’t leave.” Iris sat right on the bed edge, leaning back against the headboard. She didn’t dare touch his bandaged head, so she reached around it and rested her hand on his other arm.
The ward went quiet. Frank’s mood settled down. He lay quietly next to Iris’s legs, staring at her nervously, scared she’d be gone if he blinked.
Iris asked softly, “Frank, you want some water?”
“No.”
“Are you hungry?”
“No.”
“Do you want to sleep?”
“No.”
“Then I will tell you a story. Okay?”
“Okay!” A smile lit up Frank’s face.
“Then I’ll tell you a story about a clever trick with boats and arrows.”
“What trick with boats and arrows?”
“You’ll find out soon.” Iris smiled, her voice soft and gentle. She told the story in a way kids would love–adding fun animal characters to keep it simple and exciting. “Once upon a time, there was a young tiger named Kael. The tiger had a clever, quick–witted fox friend named Finn. One day, the tiger needed a hundred thousand arrows. He gave the task to the fox and only allowed him three days. If he failed, he would punish him badly. Do you think the fox could get a hundred thousand arrows in just three days?”
Frank asked, curious, “How much is a hundred thousand arrows?”
