Those thugs thought they could do whatever they wanted because they were underage. They tried to mess with her a few times.
Ethan had a scar next to his heart. He got it saving her back then.
The doctor said the knife wound had missed killing him by a mere tenth of an inch. But Ethan never flinched. He took on five guys by himself, held a knife up to them, and shouted, “You wanna touch my sister? You gotta walk over my dead body first. Otherwise, you’re the ones who’ll end up dead.”
Four years ago, when the virus was going around, so many people got infected and died. So many others were terrified and stayed far away from anyone who might have it.
She got infected back then. The hospital had no beds, and even her parents stayed away from her. But Ethan didn’t care. He took good care of her, risking getting infected himself, until she was completely better.
No one in the world loved her half so deeply as her twin brother, Ethan, not even her parents.
When Iris walked out of Riverfront Hospital, she had just ordered a ride on her phone when Julian called.
She checked the time–it was almost eleven. She answered right away. “Julian…”
Julian’s voice was urgent, heavy, and a little cold. “I checked the home security cameras. You’ve been out all day. I went to the research institute to find you, but you weren’t there. It’s late as hell. Where are you? Why aren’t you home?”
Iris heard the urgency and anger in his voice. She hurried to explain, “I’m at Riverfront Hospital. I…”
She didn’t even finish talking before the man on the other end blew up. His voice went cold, sharper and harsher than ever. He called her by her full name and snapped. “Iris Whitlow, what the hell are you doing? Who did you go to see?”
Iris froze, too scared to say a word for a second.
They’d been married for two years. Julian had ignored her and kept his distance. Sometimes he’d say mean stuff when he was drunk, even being sarcastic with hidden digs.
But he’d never been this mad at her before.
He seemed to realize he’d scared her. Julian’s voice softened a little, but he was still in a rush. “Answer me, Iris.”

Why is Julian so terrified I’m going to see Lily? Why is he in such a rush? Is he scared I’ll hurt Lily?
Her ride pulled up in front of her. Iris got in, told the driver her address, then spoke calmly to Julian. “Don’t worry. I didn’t go see Lily. I know she’s here too. But I’ve been taking care of my nephew all day.
“Emily beat Frank last night. He fractured his arm and had a small intracranial bleed. They noticed something was off this morning and rushed him to the hospital for surgery. Ethan’s been busy nonstop and only just got here to take over for me.”
The other end went quiet.
Iris thought maybe there was a signal issue. She checked her phone–the call was still going, but there was no sound.
After a long while, she still didn’t hear Julian say anything. She spoke again. “If you got nothing else to say, I’ll hang up.”
“I’m sorry, Iris.” His voice was quiet and hollow, worn thin from despair, edged with quiet guilt. “I’m coming to pick you up right now.”
“No need.” Iris turned to look at the night view outside the window. Her heart felt heavy, but her voice was still gentle. “I already got a ride.”
“Okay. Be careful,” Julian said softly.
Iris didn’t say anything back. She hung up.
She felt worn out, leaned back in her seat, and stared at the city’s night view.
When she got home, it was 11:40.
Iris unlocked the door with the code. The living room lights were on. She changed into slippers in the entryway, set her backpack down, then picked it up and carried it inside.
In the living room, Julian sat on the sofa in his casual pajamas. His hands were clasped, his face dark. His eyes were deep, like a calm pool hiding rough waves. He stared at her, not saying a word.
“It’s so late. Why aren’t you asleep?” Iris spoke first.
Julian said nothing. He suddenly stood up and walked quickly toward her.

He got close before she could react, pressed her against the wall, and kissed her.
His arms were strong. Since there was a big height difference between them, he lifted her up to kiss her more easily, pinning her against the wall.
Iris’s feet left the floor. Her hands clung weakly to Julian’s shoulders.
The wall was hard, and his chest was hard too. Both pressed against her body, making it a little
sore.
