This time, she came to see him on her own. It had to be about Rebecca. Ethan had already guessed it.

He gave a slow, knowing smile. “Agnes, were you waiting for the?”

Agnes looked straight at him. “Why are you treating Rebecca like this?”

Ethan shrugged. “This is between me and Rebecca. You should stay out of it.”

Agnes didn’t back down. “She’s pregnant. It’s your child. What are you going to do? When are you going to marry her?”

Ethan burst out laughing. “Marriage? I’m way too young for that. And honestly, you should go ask Rebecca -are you even sure that baby is mine?”

A wave of nausea hit Agnes. She forced her rage down and kept her voice steady. “What do you mean, Ethan?”

Ethan let out a slow breath. “To be honest, Agnes, while she was with me, I caught Rebecca messing around with my friends. Not just one-more than one. I was serious about her. I really was. Agnes actually laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“I thought you were just a jerk. Turns out you’re even worse than that. Rebecca has only ever been with you. What gives you the right to smear her name?”

Ethan shook his head, acting wronged.

“You’ve been fooled too. She’s really good at playing innocent. That’s how she had me wrapped around her finger. If my friends hadn’t told me, I never would’ve believed she was like that.”

Agnes’s eyes turned cold.

“So your friends say something, and you just believe it? You’ve been with Rebecca this long. Don’t you know what kind of person she is? From the start, you never planned to be serious with her. You were just playing with her feelings. And now that you’re bored, you’re looking for a way to dump her.”

Ethan raised his hands, as if defending himself.

“Hey, don’t twist it. I’m a good guy. Everything I had with her was real. She betrayed me first; that’s why things turned out like this. Actually, there’s another reason too.”

He took another step closer. “Just give me one chance, Agnes.”

Agnes’s face turned red with anger. She raised her hand, ready to slap him. “You jerk! Get lost!”

Ethan reacted fast. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his arms with his other hand.

“Neal, stop! Don’t hit him anymore! Don’t dirty your hands for someone like that!”

Ethan took the chance to scramble up. He covered his bleeding nose and ran off as fast as he could.

Neal turned back to Agnes, looking her over from head to toe. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Agnes said, still catching her breath. “Just ran into some trash. Luckily you showed up. What are you doing at school?”
