Agnes shot back, “If Raymond asks, tell him I insisted. You’re not responsible for me.”

She strode out of the mansion, unmoved by their pleading, and set out for the hospital to get Rebecca.

Rebecca’s eyes were rimmed with red when Agnes arrived. “Agnes, Ethan might never wake up.”

Agnes went rigid. The moment she learned Raymond had been involved, shock and disbelief swept over her features.

She recounted the events at the bar, laying bare how Ethan had tried to force himself on her.

The confession felt like swallowing glass, but Agnes refused to leave Rebecca lost in the dark, hating her and Raymond for Ethan’s sins.

Rebecca cut her off, her fingers lacing through Agnes’s as she murmured,

“I even snuck around just to see him. I didn’t realize how terrible he really was. He deserved what happened.”

Duncan remained in the hospital as well, nursing his injuries. When he heard about Ethan’s fate, terror hollowed out his gaze.

He refused to be alone for even a moment. If he woke and saw no one, panic seized him, and he would begin screaming.

Even after his mother told him that Raymond had been thrown out of the Newtons, Duncan never let his guard down. He stayed jumpy and suspicious, haunted by invisible threats.
