Deep inside, Matthew's pride—buried for years—was gently stirred.
Rebecca lifted the edge of her mask just a little and smiled. "Matthew, it's me. Rebecca."
She caught the flash of surprise—and then disappointment—on his face.
Her heart sank a little, but she had already reached her goal.
From now on, the way Matthew saw her would never be the same.
Before he could fully react, Rebecca continued, "Matthew, I'm sorry. I asked Duncan to bring me here today. Please don't blame him. I'm wearing a mask. No one will notice me."
She lowered her head, looking soft and pitiful, and spoke in a quiet voice. "I just wanted to use this chance to meet more people in business. I want to find a job soon and move out of Duncan's place. He's a good man. He took me in when I had nowhere to go. But I'm still a woman. If I stay there too long, it won't look good for him, so..."
As she spoke, her eyes slowly filled with tears. She looked up at Matthew, her voice shaking.
"Matthew, don't worry. I promise I won't cause you any trouble. I'll stay quiet and keep to myself. Please don't send me away. I'll leave soon..."
She sniffed softly and waited.
But after a long moment, Matthew didn't react.
Rebecca was furious inside. What's wrong with this old man? Is he really going to tell me to get lost?
But she had no choice. She had to keep acting calm and polite.
She took a soft breath, fixed her expression, and forced a smile. "Alright, I understand. Matthew, I'm sorry. I was too reckless today. I disturbed you. I'll leave now..."
She turned to go.
"Ms. Foster, wait."
Rebecca turned back.
Matthew handed her a tissue and said, "Ms. Foster, I understand your situation. You're welcome to stay at my charity auction. Please, make yourself comfortable."
After saying that, he gave a small nod and walked away.
Rebecca felt a quiet sense of victory. Looks like those etiquette classes I paid for were worth it.
Meanwhile, Duncan had met many powerful figures in Grandridge tonight.
Back when he was with the Newton family, he was still in college. He lived an easy life as a rich kid and rarely attended events like this.
On top of that, he was wearing glasses today, so almost no one recognized him as the former heir of the Newtons.

Ivan? He called me Ivan?
Is he finally giving me an identity? Am I one step closer to becoming part of the Shaw family?
