That night, she planned to finally let herself unwind. The next day, she would gather herself again and stay with that man through the surgery.
Evelyn brought Agnes to the most upscale private spa in Grandridge, and both of them spent the entire night there in indulgence.
Late that night, in a dim corner of Frank's hospital, a black shadow moved swiftly past.
It moved with unsettling accuracy, slipping past every surveillance camera inside the hospital.
Then suddenly, one of the hospital floors went completely dark, and the entire area was plunged into blackout.
Much later, the security team in the monitoring room finally realized something was wrong and rushed people over to inspect it.
They discovered that the affected floor was the hospital's cold storage section.
For reasons unknown, the whole level had suddenly lost electricity.
At four in the morning, Agnes was jolted awake by the sharp ringing of her phone.
She looked outside the window and saw that dawn had not yet arrived, then checked the time.
A heavy sense of unease rose in her chest. She sat up quickly and answered the call.
Frank sounded alarmed on the other end.
"Agnes, something serious happened. The hospital cold storage..."
Agnes' heart dropped instantly, and her hand started trembling around the phone.
"What happened to the cold storage?"
Frank said, "I just received a report from the hospital. The cold storage lost power for some reason.
"The security team reacted quickly and sent people to fix it. The power came back on in time...
"But..."
He stopped, frustration and helplessness tightening his voice. He did not know how to continue.
Agnes panicked. "Frank, tell me clearly now! But what? Did something happen to the corneas?"
Frank went silent for a moment before replying in a heavy voice filled with guilt.
"Yes..."
Agnes felt like her vision darkened for a second. It had only been one night, yet something still went wrong. Everything had already been arranged.
Her voice shook. "T-Tell me exactly what happened!"
Frank sighed deeply.
"After the outage, even though the power was restored quickly, there was still a gap of time before it came back online.
"During that period, the preserved corneas were exposed..."
Agnes' chest tightened painfully.
"You mean they are completely unusable now?"
Frank said, "I checked the reports. The preservation solution has started breaking down and turning cloudy.
"That means the cellular structure is already in irreversible decline due to the temperature fluctuation..."
