Chapter 53 Escaping the Mountain Town
Rebecca blinked. “You were looking for me?”
Agnes said, “Mmhm. What’s your name? How old are you?”
Rebecca replied, “My name is Rebecca Foster. I’m 16 years old,”
Agnes introduced herself, “I’m Agnes Sinclair. I’m four years older than you-20.”
Rebecca managed a small smile, then dropped her gaze and went quiet. Still painfully shy.

Agnes pressed gently. “Are you in some kind of trouble? At the store that day, everything you took was food. Are you—*
Rebecca’s face went red. She clearly didn’t want to talk about that part of her life.
Agnes’s voice softened. “Don’t worry. I just want to help. I don’t have parents either.
“I went through a lot on my own. When I saw you that day, something about you felt… familiar. That’s why I stepped in.”
Rebecca lifted her head and stared at Agnes for a long time. Something shifted behind her eyes-a shock of recognition, one survivor to another. Slowly, she began to talk.
Agnes learned that Rebecca had run away from home.
Rebecca’s mother had been trafficked-sold to a rural/town and forced into a marriage.
She was beaten constantly by her in-laws and tried to escape countless times, but never succeeded; they eventually broke her leg to stop her.
After Rebecca was born, things got worse-because Rebecca was a girl.
In that godforsaken mountain town, failing to produce a son was considered a disgrace to the ancestors.
For some reason, her mother could never get pregnant again.

The mother suffered immensely as the grandmother forced her to try every folk remedy and even brought in “exorcists” to torment her.
In the end, she still didn’t get pregnant. Eventually, her health was destroyed by the concoctions she was
forced to drink.
Her husband and mother-in-law made her life a living hell, constantly beating her and calling her “broken and “a useless womb.” They treated her like a curse on the family name because she couldn’t give them an
heir.
Over time, the abuse twisted Rebecca’s mother. She became volatile, lashing out at the only target she had
Rebecca
Rebecca had learned to cook and clean before she could read. She did every chore in the house.

Chapter 53-Escaping the Mountain Town
Her body was a map of scars- some from beatings, some from burns at the stove.
Her grandmother called her a waste of money to her face.
Her father drank and gambled. The whole family lived on government assistance and did nothing.
She had also seen her father bring different ren home all the time.
Whenever one arrived, Rebecca was locked out and told not to come back until the door opened.
She was too young to understand. She only noticed that the men always handed her father money before they left.
Her parents never sent her to school. They said educating a girl was pointless-she’d just end up someone wife anyway.
But Rebecca snuck to the town schoolhouse on her own, crouching beneath the windows to listen.
In that squalid environment, she somehow absorbed enough to keep up. She could answer the teacher’s questions.
As she grew older, she understood with perfect clarity: education was her only escape.
Her parents wouldn’t let her learn, so she taught herself in secret-picking up discarded exams, practicing problems over and over.
Whenever she helped out around the school, she’d sneak glances at textbooks on the teacher’s desk.
