Chapter 73 The Letter She Left Behind

“But my heart hurts It really hurts. I don’t want to go to Montara. I don’t want to leave Grandridge. I don’t want to leave you.

“Maybe I made things hard for you. I forced you to choose between me and Agnes. I know that hurt you. I never wanted that.

“I can’t control how I feel. I love you. I really, really love you.

“If I could go back in time, I would never leave you again. I regret it so much. I lost you. It’s all my fault.

“But I don’t regret risking my life to save you. Maybe… I owed you that.

Hillary”

“I’m leaving now. I wish you and Agnes a lifetime of happiness.- Hillary”

Raymond took a deep breath and clenched the note in his hand. His face was tense, filled with bitterness and helplessness.

No one knew how much time had passed before the light above the emergency room finally turned off. Nurses pushed Hillary out on a hospital bed.

Her eyes were closed. She was still unconscious.

The doctor walked over. “Mr. Newton, we performed a stomach wash and gave her fluids. The nurse found her in time. She’s out of danger now, but we need to observe her for a few days.”

He paused, then added, “The nurses and her attending doctors said her mood has been unstable lately. She hasn’t been cooperating with treatment. We’ll arrange for a therapist to help her.”

Raymond looked at Hillary. A wave of irritation and unease rose in his chest.

After getting Raymond’s call, Agnes took a cab straight to Estelle’s house.

She stayed busy the whole time. She cleaned the yard until it was spotless. The date tree was still growing well.

She couldn’t climb it, so she grabbed a long pole and knocked down a bunch of dates.

By noon, Raymond still hadn’t come. Estelle cooked several dishes.

The two of them waited for a while. Agnes said Raymond must be busy, so she stayed and had lunch with Estelle.

In the afternoon, she had washed clothes, cleaned the house, and worked nonstop.

By the time the last light of sunset faded, Raymond still hadn’t shown up. He hadn’t called again either.

A small sense of disappointment rose in Agnes’s heart, but she quickly calmed down.

What did she expect? He used to cancel on her all the time.

She helped Estelle settle in, said goodnight, and went home.

At the hospital, Raymond stayed by Hillary’s side the whole time.

He wondered if he had been too blunt before.

Maybe he didn’t think about her feelings enough. Maybe that was why she couldn’t handle it and chose to hurt herself.

A trace of guilt crept into his heart.

Just then, Hillary slowly opened her eyes. Her voice was weak and hoarse.

“R–Raymond…”

Raymond held her hand tightly. “I’m here. You’re safe now.”

Her eyes turned red instantly. Tears streamed down her face. Her lips trembled. “I’m… sorry…”

“Don’t talk,” Raymond said gently. “Rest. I’m right here.”

She nodded slightly.

His voice softened, but there was a hint of blame.

“Why would you do something like that? Don’t ever do this again. No one in this world is worth your life. Even for yourself… you need to live.”

Hillary shook her head, crying. “Without you… I can’t live…”

Raymond took a breath. “I promised I would take responsibility for you. But not as husband and wife. I told you when you came back… Agnes and I-”

Before he could finish, Hillary suddenly covered her ears and screamed.

“I don’t want to hear it! No! No! I don’t want to hear it!”

Raymond grabbed her hands, trying to calm her down.

But she broke down completely. She suddenly sat up and threw herself into his arms, holding him tight as she cried and begged.

“Please, Raymond, don’t send me away. I don’t want anything anymore. I’m not in pain. I won’t push you. I’ll go apologize to Agnes. It’s all my fault. I was wrong! I was wrong! Don’t leave me!”
