I froze. How did she get here so fast? I rushed to the door, and there she was, bag in hand, eyes sparkling, barreling inside. “Where are my albums? Show me!”
Seeing her impatience, I laughed and pointed to the nightstand. “There. Help yourself.”
“Oh, baby! My Avi!” Emily grabbed the albums and smothered them with kisses.
Goosebumps ran up my arms. “It’s just a few albums. Relax.”
“You don’t get it.” She didn’t even look up, running her fingers over the covers carefully. “I’ve wanted these forever. I stayed up countless nights trying to get them and never did. And now I actually own them. Feels unreal. Amanda, how did you even get this many limited editions?”
I scratched my head, feeling a little guilty. No way could I tell her I’d released them years ago. So I mumbled, “I grabbed a few extras back then. I didn’t expect they’d come in handy.”
“You really lucked out!” Emily didn’t seem convinced. She flipped to the first page of the album and examined it. The gold thread in the signature shimmered in the light, scattering into tiny sparks. No counterfeit could replicate that.
Her eyes sparkled like stars. She grabbed me, shaking with excitement. “They’re real! Amanda, you’re my hero!”
“Careful with the drool. You’re about to make a puddle.” I laughed and nudged her away, feeling a warm glow spread through me.
I used to think giving gifts was just a social thing. But watching Emily’s face light up, her fingers tracing the covers over and over, her careful, reverent breathing-it hit me.
Friendship love was simple. I offered a piece of my heart, and it filled the other person with happiness. That kind of steady, mutual care was the rarest bond.
“For my idol, who cares about my image?” Emily clutched the albums tight, dreamy-eyed. “If I ever meet my idol in real life, I swear I’ll … ”
“What will you do?” I asked curiously.
She said seriously, “I’ll ask for a hug.”
“That’s it? That’s all?” I couldn’t stop myself from laughing at how goofy she looked.
“Simple is priceless.” She was lost in her daydream, completely ignoring my look. “I really hope that day
comes.”
“Don’t worry. It will,” I said softly.
