Tanya felt as though every ounce of strength had been siphoned from her body. Her legs trembled as she stumbled into the living room.
She took a ragged breath, forcing her spine to straighten. She had to maintain her composure as the
Alpha’s mate.
A stiff, unnatural smile plastered onto her face as she looked at the man radiating danger in the center of
the room.
“Arthur,” she said, her voice wavering slightly. “You are back early. Is everything alright?”
Before Arthur could answer, a sharp, contemptuous laugh cut through the heavy silence.
Jade was sitting on the velvet sofa, her legs crossed elegantly. She looked at her stepmother with eyes
full of mockery.
“Dad stayed home specifically to keep you company,” Jade sneered. “Aren’t you happy, Tanya?”
Tanya swallowed hard, suppressing the rising terror in her gut.
“Of course,” she lied, her eyes darting nervously. “I am… very happy.”
Arthur did not smile. His face was a mask of dark thunder, a terrifying stillness that signaled the calm
before the storm of an Alpha’s fury.
He stared at her, his eyes devoid of any warmth.
“You are not going anywhere today,” Arthur said, his voice flat and commanding. “You will stay right here.”
Tanya nodded quickly, desperate to appease him.
“Yes, of course,” she stammered. “I wanted to stay home anyway. To properly mourn our poor Hugh…”
As she spoke the name, the floodgates opened.
Tears burst from her eyes, and she wept openly, trying to use her display of motherly love to appeal to his
compassion.
Jade wasn’t buying it. The corner of her mouth quirked up in a cruel, mocking smile.
“Are you sure you are mourning *his* son?” Jade asked, her voice dripping with venom. “And not the son of
Butler Harold?”
Tanya gasped, looking stricken.
“Jade!” she cried out, her face twisting in feigned hurt. “How can you say such vile things? I know you have

always been biased against me because of your mother’s death, but this is too far!”
She turned to Arthur, her eyes pleading.
“Arthur, we love each other! You know that! How can she accuse me of this?”
Jade laughed again, a harsh, cold sound.

“True love?” she scoffed. “Does your definition of true love include getting pregnant by another male?”
Jade knew exactly which buttons to push. No matter how well Tanya acted, once the Alpha’s male pride was challenged, she was finished.
“Arthur,” Tanya sobbed, reaching out to him. “She is trying to turn you against me! Don’t listen to her lies!”
“Enough!” Arthur roared.
The explosion of rage made the windows rattle.
“I trusted you!” he bellowed, standing up. “I never questioned you! But that man…”
He pointed a shaking finger at Harold.
“He was wailing at the crash site! That grief was far beyond what’s expected of a butler!”
In a fit of blind fury, Arthur grabbed his heavy phone from the table and hurled it at Tanya.
She shrieked and threw her arms up to protect her head.
*Crack.*
The phone smashed into her forearm, bruising the bone, but she survived the impact.
“I have already sent the samples to the lab,” Arthur hissed, stepping closer. “We will have the results
tomorrow.”
He delivered a vicious kick to Harold’s ribs, eliciting a groan from the broken man.
“If that boy wasn’t mine,” Arthur growled, “there will be hell to pay.”
After venting his physical rage, Arthur turned his burning gaze toward his daughter.
Jade didn’t flinch. She met his stare with cold defiance.
“Go ahead,” she challenged, lifting her chin. “Test my blood too. I don’t mind.”
Arthur’s jaw clenched.
“Do not push me, Jade,” he warned. “We do not need you airing our dirty laundry in public.”
Jade burst out laughing.
“Public?” she mocked. “Dad, wake up. The wolves on the internet analyzed the dashcam footage and figured this out before you did.”

“You betrayed my mother for this woman. You broke your vows for a woman who already had a mate. And
now? You get betrayed in return.”
Her eyes hardened into shards of ice. She finally tore off the mask of obedience.
“Let’s be clear,” Jade said, her voice steady. “I never respected you. I listened to your orders and agreed to
your marriage arrangements for one reason only.”
She took a step toward him.
“To take back Gale Entertainment. My mother built that company from the ground up with you. It belongs
to me. I wasn’t going to let you hand it over to a bastard son.”
She glanced at Tanya with disgust before delivering the final blow.
“Hugh wasn’t yours,” she stated matter–of–factly.
“And here is a thought,” she added softly, her voice lethal. “Maybe you are the problem, Dad. Maybe you don’t have the ability to sire children anymore. Maybe Tanya had to resort to getting pregnant by another
man just to give you an heir.”
The silence in the room was deafening.
“I am your only bloodline,” Jade stated, delivering her ultimatum. “Hand over the management rights. Or watch your legacy fall into the hands of outsiders.”
She sneered one last time, then turned and walked out of the room without looking back.
Tanya saw her world collapsing. She threw herself at Arthur’s feet.
“Arthur, please!” she wailed. “Remember the knife? I took a knife for you! I almost died for you!”
Arthur looked down at her with pure revulsion and kicked her away.
“If you hadn’t taken that knife for me,” Arthur said coldly, “you would be a corpse right now. I wouldn’t even
wait for the DNA results.”
He leaned down, his voice a hiss.
