Alpha's Discarded Luna (Talia) novel Chapter 133

Chapter 130

Nick’s POV

The old man’s clinic is cramped, cluttered, smelling of dried herbs and something medicinal I don’t know. Jack sits behind his counter, spectacles perched on his nose, looking at us like we’re specimens under a microscope.

His gaze finally settles on Aires, and right then, his phone starts to buzz.

Hey, your phone’s ringing. Aren’t you going to answer it?

Jack’s voice is dry and uninterested. Aires doesn’t move to take out his phone. No, the appointment is more important.

Jack shrugs, unconcerned. I’ve seen it ring a few times. Could be urgent.

Aires ends the call without checking the screen. It’s nothing important.

Jack raises an eyebrow. You didn’t answer, so how do you know it wasn’t urgent?

I step forward, impatience creeping into my voice. Old man, we’re here for treatment, not chatting about unnecessary 1/5 topics.

Chapter 130

Jack gives me a lazy look, his eyes scanning my face, my posture, my hands. Treatment? For what? Stupidity? Foolishness? His gaze slides to Imema, lingering. Or pretending to be sick when you’re perfectly fine?

Imema’s lashes flutter. Her breath quickens. Jack notices immediately.

Miss, your breathing is fast. Heart rate’s up. Nervous about something?

Imema forces a smile, pressing a hand to her chest. I just feel a little unwell. A bit suffocated, that’s all.

Jack adjusts his glasses, eyeing her up and down with the practiced assessment of someone who’s seen every trick in the book. Unwell? Your complexion is rosy. You seem full of energy. He glances around at the three of us, his expression almost amused. Seriously, which one of you is actually sick?

I bristle. You can’t even tell who needs a doctor?

Jack turns his gaze on me, and suddenly I feel like a specimen under the microscope. His eyes are sharp, too sharp, cutting through the bravado I have worn for years.

You have a fiery temper. He ticks off each diagnosis like a shopping list. Bad breath. Constipation. Irregular stools. You 2/5

smoke, you drink, you stay up late. No selfcontrol. Some kidney issues. He pauses, letting the silence stretch, letting me sweat. Right now, you’ve got mild erectile dysfunction. If you don’t get it treated soon, it could affect yourmanhood.

He gives me a sly smile. Better get on it, or your wife’s happiness might be a thing of the past.

My face burns. Years ago, before Imema, before all of this, I was careless. Too many women, too many late nights, too much of everything. But that was years ago. I’ve been fine. I’ve been-

Imema takes a step back from me, A small movement, barely perceptible, but I catch it. Her eyes flick over me, and I see something I’ve never seen there before.

Is it disgust? Fear, or uncertainty?

She’s calculating. I know that look. She’s wondering if the only reason I’ve been so devoted to her is because no one else would

have me. She’s wondering if I’m damaged, broken, useless, and I can’t even stand the thought of it!

I want to shout, to explain, to tell her that’s not true. But Jack’s words have planted something I can’t easily dig out.

You quack!I point at Jack, my voice shaking. You’re just spouting nonsense!

Jack doesn’t flinch. He just smiles that infuriating, knowing smile. Whether I’m spouting nonsense, only God, you, and I know.

Aires’s voice cuts through the tension, calm and measured. Mr.

what’s Carter. Can you take a look at me? Tell me

wrong.

Jack glances at him, then slowly, deliberately, lets his gaze travel from Aires’s face to his hands and back again. He takes his time, savoring the silence.

You?He exhales, long and slow. Your problems are bigger. You’re the one with the most issues out of the three of you today. He gestures to the worn wooden chair across from his desk. Sit down. Let me take a closer look.

I catch Aires’s glance. He’s watching Jack the same way I am, searching for cracks, for lies, for evidence that this old man is a fraud. But there’s something else there too. Something I haven’t seen in Aires in a long time. Hope.

Because if Jack is realif he can see through people the way he claims, then maybe he can help Imema.

I spent a fortune finding this doctor. Months of searching, of bribing informants, of chasing rumors across three cities. And now I’m not sure I want him anywhere near her.

Is/eis it possible that he’s a fraud?

Chapter 130

Imema’s POV

How wonderful! Relief floods through me, warm and sudden. He’s a fraud. A scammer, and nothing more.

It’s perfect.

I almost smile to myself.

Greedy men are easy to manage. Feed them money, keep them happy, and they’ll say whatever you want. I can work with this. Let him prescribe whatever he wants, claim the treatments are working, and buy myself more time.

A year perhaps, and I’ll announce I’m miraculously cured.

I was so worried about how to maintain the lie, how to keep Aires tethered when my supposed illness ran out.

Now the answer has walked right through the door.
