Jack’s face turns red, his voice rising with genuine fury. “Absurd! You run around for other women, working hard for medicine, but blame your wife. It seems your mother isn’t as important as that woman!”

His eyes sweep over Aires with undisguised contempt, scorn sharpening every word.

“You’ve forgotten the pain after the wound healed. Forgotten how long it’s been since your stomachache and insomnia flared up, or since you last cried out in pain while walking a single step? If not for her, do you think you’d have the leisure or even the ability to escort other women to the doctor? You’d be writhing in pain, rotting in your bed!”

He points toward the door, his voice like a whip. “Get out! Heartless people aren’t welcome here! If I’d known you were Talia’s husband, I’d have kicked you out yesterday!”

Jack doesn’t even blink. “Sure, call the police and arrest me then.”

Nick’s mouth opens, but Aires stops him with a look. His voice is measured, controlled. “Mr. Carter, what will it take for you to treat Imema?”

He’s skeptical, I can see it. But his mother’s headaches did lessen considerably with Jack’s medicine. Also, he and Aeson are both healthy. Maybe, this old quack might be worth the effort in his eyes.

Jack’s eyes narrow. “I don’t want to be heartless. If you want me to treat her, she stays and does chores like Talia did for months.”

He looks at me. “A week. If she just lasts a week doing what Talia did, I’ll cure her.”

Nick hesitates, then straightens. “Then I’ll stay for

Jack doesn’t even look at him. “No substitutions. Whoever wants to be cured stays. If you stay, I’ll assume you want to treat your hidden illness.”

Talia’s eyes flick to Nick, and his face burns red with

embarrassment.

“Stop talking nonsense!”

Jack shrugs. “Young man, don’t hide your illness. Treat it quickly. If you delay, you’ll regret it.”

Nick starts to argue, but I touch his arm. I need to stop this before it gets worse.

“If this gentleman can cure me, I’ll stay.”

The words come out steady, certain. What’s more important: life or chores? Anyone sensible knows the shojce.

Aires checks his watch again, frowning. “I’m in a hurry. Let’s talk next time.”

Talia’s laugh is sharp. “Next time? When is that going to be? On the day you die?”

Nick jumps in immediately. “Talia, how dare you curse the Alpha to die?”

Talia doesn’t even look at him. “What right do you have to interfere between Aires and me? A grown man whining like a brat and meddling in others‘ families, do you think it’s the respectable thing to do?”

Nick’s face purples. No one speaks to him like this, no one. He’s the heir of the Thornes, respected and feared as the closest allys to the Perseus family. And this woman-

Jack’s voice interrupts, slow and deliberate. “Nick, why do you want to interrupt a couple’s conversation? If you affect their relationship, your marriage will suffer in return.”

Aires looks at Talia, then at me, then back at Talia. Perhaps, he knows he can’t brush off this pesky woman this time. “Let’s talk outside.”

Nick moves to follow, and I relax, knowing that he’ll bring me all the important information. But before he can go a small figure blocks his path.

Robin looks up at him, his face serious.

“Didn’t you hear? If you disturb a couple’s conversation, your married life will suffer in return.”

Nick shoves him aside. Robin hits the floor with a small

Nick stands there, caught between following and staying, his face a mask of frustrated fury as I watch the door close behind them.

Relief floods through me. That child’s cleverness will never fail to surprise me, it seems.

Outside, I turn to face Aires, letting the weeks of frustration form a cold and unyielding shield around me.

“You promised me to meet yesterday morning at the courthouse.” I hold his gaze. “You didn’t show, that’s one thing. But to not call, or bother to lie, it’s really insulting.”

He opens his mouth, but I cut him off.

“Are you going to explain yourself or not? Either way, we’re finishing this matter.”
