Chapter 142
Talia’s POV
This divorce agreement is identical to the one I prepared before. Equal division of property. Nothing more, nothing less.
Last time, he didn’t agree. He wanted me to leave with nothing. I truly didn’t want to have any more dealings with him, so in the end, I gave my consent.
I was ready to walk away with empty hands, just to be free of him.
But on the day we were supposed to go to the Courthouse, he left me standing there like a fool, the appointment slipping away while he went about his day as if nothing had happened.
I learned something that day. If I do not strive for certain things, nobody will do it for me.
Now Aires stands before me, his expression turning gloomy as he looks at the papers in my hand. “Talia, you aregalways using divorce to threaten me.” His voice is14:14

He exhales sharply, running a hand through his hair. “If you truly mind it, how about tomorrow?”
His tone shifts, almost conciliatory. “Actually, I can go out with you right now. It is all up to you. We can go wherever you like.”
I stare at him. I cannot believe what I am hearing.
“Date?” The word comes out before I can stop it. “Aires, are you sick?” My voice rises despite myself. “I asked you to go to the Courthouse to get a divorce. Now you are acting like I wanted to go on a date with you?”
Given Imema’s interference and Nick’s mockery, I have a rough guess about where this confusion comes from. They must have painted me as a desperate woman using legal proceedings to manipulate attention, but he’s the bigger fool for believing them.
I let out a short, bitter laugh. “I told you I wanted a divorce, and you claimed I was deliberately trying to get your attention. When I asked you to go to the Courthouse, you even said I was playing tricks on purpose just to go on a date with you.”

face. “Since you do not seem to understand what I am saying, let me ask you directly.” My voice is steady, deliberate.
“What do you want me to do to make you believe that I really want to divorce you?”
Something shifts in his expression. A flicker of surprise, or recognition. He looks like a man who has been struck by a sledgehammer and is only now feeling the impact.
He says nothing.
I shrug, letting my tone turn breezy, indifferent. “Of course, you can still reckon that I am pulling some sort of stunt here. Trying to get your attention on purpose.” I pause, letting the words hang. “But let me tell you straight. I will not sign on Nick’s understanding letter.”
His jaw tightens.
“Even though he will not be held in custody for long, just having a criminal record is more than enough to mess up his future standing in the company.” I tilt my head, watching him. “You know. It will make his position all shaky and uncertain.”

A laugh escapes me. I don’t get angry, I am past it. “I am vicious?” I shake my head slowly. “Your so–called best friend and brother, he was not vicious when he was hurling insults at me? When he came charging in here, acting all crazy, that was not vicious?”
My smile stays in place, but I can feel frost creeping into my eyes. “Now that he has got what was coming to him for his lousy deeds, you turn around and call me vicious?”
I take a step closer. “If you think fairness is the same as being vicious, then you might as well not even bother living. Or you would get poisoned to death in no time.”
He fixes his gaze on me, unblinking. I have seen that look before, on nights when I asked too many questions, when I pushed too hard for answers I was never going to get.
“Talia.” His voice is low, measured. “Are you sure you really want to divorce me?”
I do not avoid his gaze. I meet it head–on. “I am sure.”
A long moment passes. Then he nods.
“Okay.” His voice is flat. “It is still the same deal as last4:14 time. You walk out of this house empty–handed, and then

my signature on the divorce agreement.”
I look at his condescending manner, the way he holds himself like he is granting me a favor. Like he is offering alms to a beggar who should be grateful for any scrap he throws.
I burst out laughing.
“Aires.” I shake my head, still smiling. “It is you who is coming to me with your hat in your hand now, not the other way around. The smart thing for you to do is just sign the papers willingly. That way, we can part ways amicably and get this whole messy divorce over with.”
His expression hardens.
“If you are not up for signing, I could not care less.” 1 shrug. “At worst, we will just duke it out in court. But your dear brother? Well, he will probably have to rot in jail.”
I watch his face, noting every flicker of tension. “I heard that he scratched himself up real bad. Nearly disfiguring his own face. Even if the cuts heal in the end, there will be Some ugly scars left behind.”

Jack’s clinic. Now Jack hates his guts and is dead set on not whipping up an antidote for him.”
I lock eyes with him and offer a faint smile. “I am really curious whether a behemoth like the Thorne Group can stomach an heir who has got a criminal record and a disfigured mug.”
Aires’s face has turned so gloomy it is downright terrifying. The air between us crackles with tension.
His voice comes out cold, each word deliberate. “Are you threatening me?”
I keep my tone calm, pleasant even. “Mr. Perseus, you are overthinking it. I am just a housewife. How could I possibly pose a threat to you?”
I know the truth. Nick and Aires are lifelong friends. Otherwise, Aires would not be so forbearing toward someone like Nick, who does nothing but stir up trouble for him. Even when Nick repeatedly hurled insults at me right in front of him, he stayed quiet. Let it happen.
But Nick, for all his importance, is not important enough togAires to sacrifice half of his fortune.

the property should be split equally, deep down I know it will be an uphill battle to actually get my hands on half of it. Even if it comes to a court battle, he will resort to all sorts of tricks to reclassify these properties as pre–marital
assets.
He has made a profit from his pre–marital assets, and Raymond told me that I would not be getting a single penny. Aires has already had the property notarized with me prior to our marriage.
There might exist a glimmer of hope for me to secure a few thousands, but the idea of claiming hundreds of millions is an unachievable dream.
Still, he does not need to know what I know.
I meet his strained face and continue. “This time, Nick went to Jack’s place and caused such a ruckus all because of Imema. Jack was fuming mad, and now he is refusing to treat her.”
Before I can finish, his hand shoots out. He grasps my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze. His fingers are cold, unyielding. Every word that comes out of his mouth lands like ice cubes dropping onto a hard plate. Cold. Hard, 4:14
