Chapter 197
Electra’s POV
Aeson’s arrival means I cannot speak ill of Aires as freely as I
want, and so, we stick to safe topics.
The meal passes with Robin entertaining us through the conversation. He is young, but he is witty, and keeps everyone laughing and adoring him.
Talia is trying her best to ignore Aeson, but I do not. I know he
must be in a crisis, and keep asking him about small things
like his homework or the events happening at school.
He answers politely, with impeccable manners and etiquette.

After all, he’s always been perfectly polite with outsiders. The
only one who had to face his detachment and anger was my
poor best friend, who loved him more than life itself.
I look at his small face, which is so much like Aires’s. He
resembles his father more because unfortunately, their temperament is also quite similar.
Otherwise, no one knows better than me how much Talia
loves this boy. She endured Imema for him, made herbal
soup for her like a servant and endured all kinds of taunts
and unfair attitudes… just for him.
After a while, I ask, “Aeson, is there something important that
you came to see your mom for?”
His fingers pinch his bag. “I… I have something to give to my
mom.” 2/11

Talia finally looks at him, and I lean in. “What is it?”
Aeson hesitates, and slowly, his gaze meets Talia’s. He
swallows. “Can I…” He stops, then starts again. “Can I give it to you alone?”
Aeson’s POV
“It’s okay, you can give it here, Aeson…”
Aunt Electra urges me, but I’m not even paying attention to
her. Actually, this is the first time mom has looked directly at
me, making eye contact since I walked into the restaurant.

My chest feels tight, like bubbles of happiness are rising high. Aunt Athena was right, mom still cares about me. As long as I
admit my mistake, she will come back.
The thought makes me feel a little more confident. Right now,
she hasn’t even seen it!
When she does, she will be blown away.
I open my bag on the chair and take out the cup. My hands
suddenly feel clumsy. “This is the birthday gift I prepared for
my mom.” I hold it out. “I got it back from Ms. Volkov…”
I rarely have to admit that I am wrong, and the words feel
strange in my mouth. Shame burns in my cheeks.

I extend my hand, holding out the cup. My voice drops. “This is the cup I made myself. Mom, I hope you like it…”
This is my apology. It has to work, like it always works. I say something sweet, she hugs me and everything goes back to
normal.
But she doesn’t reach out to take it.
I stare at her with my hand hanging in the air. My face goes
pale. Why is she not taking it? She is supposed to take it. She is supposed to hug me. She is the easiest person to please,
she always was.
The table becomes quiet, and my embarrassment grows even further. Raymond watches from his chair, his eyes dark,
while aunt Electra looks at me with pity in her eyes.

Robin shifts beside me, but my gaze is fixed on mom. I can’t tell if she is happy or angry, and I have no idea what she is
thinking.
My hand starts to shake.
Robin steps forward. “Aeson, is this your birthday gift to Ms.
Jackson?” He smiles. “It is so beautiful!” He reaches out. “Let
me help you give it to Ms. Jackson.”
I freeze. He takes the cup from my hand. I reach for it, too
slow. My fingers brush his.
The cup slips.

CRACK!
It hits the floor, and pieces scatter everywhere. Everyone
stares, and Robin’s face crumples.
“Aeson, I am sorry.” His voice wobbles. “It is all my fault. I was
too careless…”
I look at the shattered pieces. The cup I made, the one I got
back from Imema… the one I was going to give to my mom.
Something inside me snaps.
I lose my mind. My finger jabs at Robin. “You did it on

purpose! You broke my birthday gift for my mom on
purpose!”
I worked so hard. I burned so many cups just to make one that was perfect. And now it is destroyed. Gone. My chest feels like it is cracking open.
Robin’s face crumples. “I really did not. Aeson, you misunderstood…” Tears fill his eyes. “Aeson, I am so sorry.”
He crouches down to pick up the pieces. I watch him. Let him
clean up his mess.
“Ah!” He jerks back. Blood wells up from his finger. A piece of ceramic, sharp like a blade.

“Robin!” Talia’s voice cuts through. She moves fast, pulling
him up from the ground.
Robin hangs his head. “Ms. Jackson, I am sorry. I accidentally broke the cup Aeson gave you.”
“My birthday has passed.” She takes his hand, inspecting the
cut. “If it is broken, so it is broken.”
My eyes widen. I stare at her. The gifts I gave her–candy, drawings, anything–she treasured them all. Athena ate one
piece of candy once, and Talia, who never gets angry, lost it.
Now my cup is broken, and she does not even look at it. She is looking at Robin. Only at Robin.

“Electra,” she says, “help me borrow the medical kit from
the restaurant. Robin’s wound needs to be disinfected and
bandaged.”
Robin pulls his hand back. “Ms. Jackson, I am fine.” His voice
is small. “It is all my fault. I am clumsy and cannot even hold
a cup.”
Talia touches his head. “It has nothing to do with you-”
“Mom!” I shout. My voice cracks. “He broke the cup I gave you! I made it for you myself!”
My body is shaking, and I can’t make sense of this. She
should be angry at him, not comforting him!

It’s my right, my share of affection and attention that she is sharing with this cunning boy.
