Raymond’s voice cuts through the air, deep and magnetic. Imema and Aires stop mid–step. He does not raise his voice. He does not need to.

“Mr. Perseus, Ms. Volkov, you have wronged Eleanor.” He leans back in his chair, arms crossed. “Are you not going to apologize?”

Imema turns, her expression already shifting into something defensive, something wounded. “Ms. Jackson might be Aeson’s mother, but she took him without informing anyone.” She tilts her head, innocent, aggrieved. “I think the one who owes an apology here is her, don’t you think?”

came with us willingly.” His voice is clear, sharp for a child. “Ms. Volkov, you have always said Aeson does not lie.” He looks at her. “Have you already forgotten what you said so quickly?”

Imema’s mouth opens. Closes. She did not expect a child to call her out.

Raymond smiles. It is not a kind smile. “What is this? Mr. Perseus and Ms. Volkov falsely accuse someone and do not even apologize?” He tilts his head. “Is it that you never admit when you are wrong, or is it that you simply refuse to apologize to Eleanor?” His gaze flicks to Aeson, standing right beside them, watching. “Is this the example you are setting for Aeson?”

The words land. I see it in the way Aires’s jaw tightens. The way Imema’s carefully composed mask flickers.

Aeson is watching. Eager. Waiting. If they refuse to apologize, how can they ever expect him to trust them again?

Once Aires apologizes, Imema has no reason not to follow. She wears the expression well. Apology. Contrition. “Ms. Jackson, I am sorry.” She pauses. “I misunderstood.”

Aeson looks away. I watch his face. He does not think it is wrong. He was taught that when you are wrong, you apologize. And they were wrong. So they apologized.

Aires and Imema leave with Aeson. No one stops them.

The door closes. Electra exhales loudly, dropping into her chair. “Eleanor, what is going on with Aeson and Aires?” She gestures vaguely. “They always look down on you. Don’t they know you went to college?”

Raymond looks at me. “Why does your record suddenly disappear after high school?”

I set the glass down. “I did not finish high school. I left the country right after.”

I lower my lashes. “That is because I used a different name while studying abroad. The records under that name were deliberately altered.” I pause. “So it is not surprising you cannot find them.”

Raymond’s gaze sharpens. “Altered?”

He stills. “Which Nelson Group?” His voice changes. Darkens. “You do not mean the Nelson Group from Maynard, do you?”

Electra nods. “Yes. That is the one.”

Raymond’s eyes intensity as he looks at me. “Care to elaborate?”

I think about it. The Capaldis have helped me countless times. There are things he needs to know.

I am silent for a moment. Then I speak.

“Honestly, it is a pretty cliché story. My parents had a business marriage. From the day they married, my father never really liked my mother.” I trace the rim of my glass. “He was still hung up on his first love. Even though my mother got pregnant and had his child not long after, he kept entangled with her for many years.”

I remember the calm and gentle expression on my mother’s face when she spoke about that part of the past. The way her eyes softened.

I continue, my voice softer. “Just when my mother thought things would stay that way forever, something unexpected happened. On their wedding anniversary, my father planned a sailing trip for her. During the journey, they hit a storm.”

I look down. “When they returned, my mother sent out search parties. Offered a large reward. But they found nothing.”

I let the silence stretch. Then I continue. “My mother still had three young children to care for. She had to push through the pain and take over the company for my father. Three years passed quickly. Everyone believed my father was dead. But my mother never gave up hope.”

I take a sip of water. “Then, one day, she received a tip. Someone in a fishing village had seen a man who looked just like my father.”

I set the glass down. “My mother had gotten so many similar tips over the years. She did not hold out much hope. But when she went there, she found out that the man was actually my father. She was shocked. Overjoyed. She did not even have time to think about why he had been alive all this time but had not contacted her for three years.”

I smile. Helpless. “Cliché, right? But yes. My father really did have amnesia. And he ended up marrying the fisherwoman who saved him.”

I pause. “When my father first learned that he had a wife and children, he was deeply resistant to the idea of his own identity. Because to him, my mother and I were strangers. But Jessica, the one who saved his life, was there by his side. Refusing to leave when his memory was completely gone and his mind a blank slate.” I meet Raymond’s eyes. “She was his true redemption.”

Raymond’s voice is quiet. “So, he was willing to give up the massive Nelson Group, his prestigious position, and be with the woman who saved his life?”
