Aires looks at her. Really looks at her. His gaze sweeps over

her face like he is seeing her for the first time in years.

His voice comes out unexpectedly hoarse. “Why did you not tell me about what happened at Aeson’s birthday party?”

Talia’s laugh is short and sharp. “I did tell you, did I not?” She meets his eyes. “You said they did not do it intentionally. You told me not to ruin Aeson’s party.” Her voice drips with sarcasm. “Have you already forgotten?”

Aires presses his lips together. They form a thin, tight line. “But you did not tell me everything afterward.”

Talia sneers. “You think I did not want to? I barely started talking when Imema suddenly fainted again.” She mimics a swooning gesture. “You dropped everything and ran to her. Then you spent over a month traveling with her.”

Her voice hardens. “I called you to tell you that Diana had taken Aeson away. You told me not to worry because she was his grandmother and would not harm him.” She ticks off her fingers. “And even after Aeson came home, you were still traveling with Imema.”

She looks at him, her face devoid of emotion. “Aires, do you

not find it laughable that you are only asking me now?”

Her words hit him like stones. Something clicks behind his eyes. He suddenly recalls when it all happened. The timing. The sequence of events. The way everything fell apart while he was not paying attention.

He parts his lips slightly, but all he can offer is a feeble explanation. “I was not traveling with Imema for fun. I was taking her to see doctors. Specialists. People who might be able to help her.” He swallows. “The media made up the rest.

They twisted everything.”

Talia remains indifferent. Her expression does not change. “We are no longer together.” Her voice is flat, final. “You do not need to explain yourself to me.”

Aires looks at her. Something vulnerable flickers in his eyes. “I just wanted you to know… Imema and I are not what you think. The media blew everything out of proportion.”

In the past, he would not have bothered explaining at all. He would have walked away, assuming she would fall in line, believing what he told her to believe.

Seeing her unyielding expression, he softens his tone. “I am sorry.” The words come out awkward, unpracticed. “I did not realize what Nick’s friends did would have such a big impact

on you and Aeson.”

Talia sneers. “Rome was not built in a day.” She shakes her head. “Do you really think they would look down on me just because of this one incident?”

She steps closer, her voice low and cutting. “Nick disrespecting me under your nose did not happen overnight. It has been years. Years of snide comments, of mocking glances, of him treating me like dirt and you saying nothing.”

She holds up a hand, ticking off his responses. “Other than saying meaningless things like ‘enough‘ or ‘let us leave it at that,’ what else have you done? You have never punished him. You have never made him apologize. You have never once stood up for me.”

She looks at him, her face hard. “And now, Aeson is being bullied because people think I am an easy target. They see how you treat me, how your family treats me, how your friends treat me, and they follow your lead.”

Her voice cracks, just a little. “You are finally realizing how serious this is? Now? After everything?”

She shakes her head. “Aires, you are the first person I have

ever seen who would sacrifice his own family and child just

to keep his so–called friend happy. If you keep letting Nick do whatever he wants, it is only a matter of time before Aeson gets hurt beyond repair.”

Perhaps knowing she is right, Aires does not argue. He stands

there, silent, taking the blows.

“I will keep Nick in check from now on.” His voice is low. “I will

talk to him. Make sure he understands.”

Talia is exasperated. She stares at him, waiting for more. But that is it. That is all he offers. Aeson’s suffering, her

humiliation, years of neglect and dismissal, and all she gets is a vague promise of restraint.

She had run out of patience with Aires a long time ago. She is

not about to find more now.

“Is there anything else?” Her voice is cold. “If not, I will be

going.”

Aires grabs her wrist. His fingers wrap around her skin, warm

and insistent.

“Talia, Aeson is still young.” His eyes search hers. “He needs his mother. While you have been away, he has been in low spirits. He does not say it, but I can see it.”

He pauses. “I know I neglected you before. I see that now. From now on, I will spend more time with the family. I will be

more present.”

He takes a breath. “For Aeson’s sake, can you stop this

tantrum? Come home.”
