< Chapter 28
How many times will this drama go on like this? I think I’ve had enough for one lifetime already.

matter for an enforcer, not for me. I pull out my phone again. Talia’s number glares back at me. Still no answer. The silent treatment. My irritation spikes. Is this her new game? Petty, stubborn refusal?
I’m about to redial when Leo exits the room. He doesn’t look like a man who has delivered an ultimatum. He looks… unsettled.
“Well?” I demand. “Does she deny it?”

He glances at me, then at the door, an unfamiliar hesitance in his eyes. “Alpha… I think you should see for yourself.”
Leo is never hesitant. If he says I should look, it’s because he cannot process what he’s seen.
A cold, sinking feeling begins in my gut. I dismiss him with a glance and push the door open.
The sight inside stops me dead.
Talia is propped up in the hospital bed. Her face is ashen, marred by a fresh cut on her temple and the fading yellow-green of the bruise from yesterday’s mob. She looks at me not with surprise, but with a weary, bitter recognition.
All the air leaves the room.

here?”
She doesn’t move. Her voice is flat, stripped of all emotion. “You tell me, Aires. You’re the one who came looking. You know why you’re here better than I do.”
The pieces crash together with the force of the collision itself. The other car. The driver who wouldn’t admit fault. Imema’s terrified description.
My voice is hollow. “The driver who hit Imema… is you?”

Chapter 28
Talia’s POV
“Yes,” I say. The word is simple, final.
A
I watch the understanding dawn on his face. It’s not a dramatic shift. It’s a subtle fracture, a flicker in those cold silver eyes, like a crack appearing in a frozen lake. His certainty wavers.
He looks at me, and for once, his gaze isn’t just cold. It’s complicated, searching. “When you called… you were in the car?”
My voice is soft, stripped bare. “When you were carrying her to safety, my foot was trapped in the wreckage. I called you. I hoped you would save me, too.”
But he hung up. He didn’t just hang up. He walked away. He never once looked in my direction. His entire world had narrowed to the crying woman in his arms.
Am I disappointed? No. Disappointment requires hope. I buried that hope in the ashes of my burning car.
But the feeling of being abandoned at the moment of death…
that was a new, uniquely terrible flavor of hell. One I never want to taste again.

Chapter 26
My phone is heavy in my hand. The memory surfaces, sharp and unwelcome: her call, at the accident scene. Imema was crying, hurt. I dismissed it.
Now, in the echoing silence, I press my thumb over her name.
It rings and rings, but there is no answer at all.
The call goes silent. I try again, and yet again.
Only silence greets me each time.
Nick’s smug voice echoes in my head. “Women have a lot of experience manipulating men for their benefit. That’s why, Alpha! It’s best to not spoil them with too much attention, love, gifts or freedom. If any of these four things gets excessive, they tend to forget their place.”
Is that what this is? A petty display of silence because I dared to prioritize an actual emergency over her tantrums for once?
It’s fine! I have spoiled her too much for one lifetime. Maybe, she will get less stubborn once she faces the hardships of the real world, instead of fussing over what I do for Imema while being comfortable under my protection.
I won’t call her anymore, either.

I feel like an idiot.

Chapter 27
Talia’s POV
The buzzing of my phone doesn’t penetrate my exhausted sleep. I only see the missed calls in the cold light of morning. A dozen of them. All from Aires.
A cold, mirthless smile touches my lips. Now he calls. After the fire is out, after the damsel is saved. I place the phone face down on the bedside table and ignore it.
Half an hour later, a firm knock. Two police officers enter, their expressions professionally neutral.
I recount the accident exactly as I remember it. The green light, the turn, the dark sedan materializing from nowhere, the violent impact.
୮
The lead officer takes notes, then asks, “Ms. Perseus, you’re certain the other vehicle struck you? Not the reverse?”
A chill, subtle and familiar, trickles down my spine. “What do you mean? Is she claiming I hit her?”
“In the absence of traffic cameras at that intersection, we must rely on driver statements. Currently, the accounts are contradictory. Ms. Volkov maintains you were at fault.” 1/5

e air leaves his lungs in a startled yelp. He stumbles back, rashing into the small table by the wall. The ceramic pitcher and cup shatter on the floor.
Imema gasps, rushing forward as if to help him, but with her injured arm, she can’t get a proper hold, either.
She slips on the water and tumbles down with him, landing with a cry amidst the jagged shards of porcelain. The pairing of dumb and dumber sit on the floor, feeling angry and unjust, not able to decide who exactly they should be angry at.
At that exact moment, the door swings open again.

My Beta, Leo, finishes his quict report in Imema’s hospital room. His voice is low, meant not to disturb her, but she hears every word.
“The other driver is not admitting fault, Alpha. She claims Ms. Volkov was at fault. The intersection has no cameras. A police investigation will be… protracted.”
On the bed, Imema’s face pales further. A genuine tremor shakes her voice. “She came out of nowhere, Aires. So fast. She didn’t even try to stop. It was like she wanted to…” She lets the sentence hang, looking at her bandaged wrist. A single tear escapes. “My concert… my hand…”
“A specialist team is already on their way,” I tell her, my voice firm. “Focus on healing. I will handle the driver.”
She shakes her head, the picture of fragile, unjustly wronged nobility. “She has connections. She’ll have erased any evidence. It will be her word against mine… and who will they believe?”
The implication is clear: Talia, the vengeful wife. “You will have justice,” I promise, the words leaving my lips with cold certainty. A promise from an Alpha is a bond. She gives me a tearful, trusting smile.
Minutes later, I stand in the hallway as Leo approaches a door down the hall. He’s identified the other driver’s room. This is a
