Chapter 289
Talia’s POV
The deafening echoes of fracturing bones and shattering
steel slowly dissolve into the concrete walls of the
abandoned warehouses. A heavy, suffocating silence returns
to the 12th intersection, pressing down on my chest like a
physical weight. The thick, metallic stench of copper and burning radiator fluid fills the damp midnight air, a horrifying testament to the massacre that just unfolded before my eyes.
I remain frozen against the rough brick wall of the loading dock, my hands still tightly clenched behind my back. My breath comes in short, shallow gasps. My bare shoulder
shivers violently against the biting midnight wind, the skin completely goosefleshed where my sleeve was torn away. My eyes remain wide, tracking the single figure standing in
the center of the dark, ruined road.
The silence is broken only by Aires’ ragged, heavy breathing.
His massive frame heaves as the thick, suffocating wave of his murderous Alpha aura gradually recedes into the dark. The brilliant, terrifying crimson light in his eyes slowly fades away, leaving behind two dark, hollow pupils, that look
completely fractured. He drops a heavy iron pine from his

through the empty industrial zone.
He turns around slowly, his gaze instantly locking onto me. The feral, unstoppable predator who just systematically dismantled twenty armed mercenaries vanishes in a split
second. In his place is a man who looks completely broken, his features twisting into an expression of raw, agonizing horror as his eyes register my torn dress and my shivering
body.
Aires stumbles forward, his steps clumsy, heavy, and completely stripped of his usual commanding grace. He crosses the short distance between us as if he is walking through deep mud, his hands trembling violently at his sides.
Before I can take a step away, his knees give out entirely.
The heavy thud of his knees hitting the cold, broken concrete echoes loudly in the quiet night. The powerful Alpha of the pack drops directly to the floor right before my feet, his shoulders collapsing inward as a low, broken sob tears from his throat. He rips his heavy black leather jacket from his shoulders, his movements frantic and desperate, and wraps it carefully around my shaking shoulders. The leather is
warm, carrying his distinct, heavy scent of cedar and ozone, but the warmth does nothing to calm the freezing numbness in my chest.

He reaches out, his large, calloused hands hovering just inches away from my ankles, shaking so hard he cannot even
find the strength to touch my shoes.
“Talia… oh God, Talia,” Aires weeps, his voice rough, cracked,
and completely dripping with a desperate, suffocating
agony. He buries his face in his hands, his head bowing all the way down to the concrete floor before me. “I am sorry… I
am so incredibly sorry. I am a fool. A blind, arrogant fool.”
I look down at the back of his head, my expression
completely neutral, my heart remaining dead still against my
ribs.
“I heard him,” Aires chokes out through his tears, his chest
heaving violently as he offers his desperate apology. He lifts
his head, looking up at me with eyes that are completely red,
swollen, and begging for a scrap of mercy. “I went to Nick’s
penthouse… I overhears him bragging on the phone about
what they planned to do to you. I froze, Talia. My entire world
completely shattered in that living room. The things he said…
the things they wanted to do to you…”
He reaches up, his trembling fingers gently catching the
edge of his leather jacket where it rests on my chest, trying desperately to pull me closer to his warmth.

everything is entirely my fault. My own blindness, my own
stupid assumptions caused this horror to walk right to your
door. I assumed you were wrong because it was easy. I assumed you were an unrefined, quiet housewife who would just endure everything without a fuss, while I kept a monster wrapped tightly around my family. If my instincts hadn’t stopped me at his door, if I had been sleeping… you would
have been entirely destroyed tonight. Because of me.”
He presses his forehead against my silver shoes, his tears
wetting the leather. “I swear to you, Talia… I swear on my
blood and my title, I will never let you be in this position
again. I will place the entire pack at your gates. I will personally destroy anyone who even looks at you with malice. Just… please, don’t look at me like I am a stranger.”
The waves of his remorse roll over my feet, heavy, desperate,
and loud, but they strike against a wall of solid ice. I look at
this powerful man sobbing on the floor, the man who once
held my entire universe in his palms and used that power to
freeze me out of his world.
Though my body is weak, shivering, and drained from the
lingering fever, a sudden, sovereign strength returns to my
spine.

connection entirely. I pull his large leather jacket tighter
around my torn bodice, not to accept his warmth, but simply
to shield my bare skin from his sight.
I look down at him, my dark pupils turning like two chips of ice under the moonlight, completely detached from the
bleeding display of his grief.
“You still do not understand, Alpha Aires,” I say, my voice
