Chapter 294

Aires’ POV

The cold midnight rain continues to slide down the stone exterior of the veranda, but I no longer feel the chill against my skin.

I am completely numb, a hollow statue pressed flat against the dark ivy vines. My eyes are fixed on the narrow gap in the cracked-open French doors, my hyper-acute hearing locked onto the sharp cadence of Imema’s voice as she cuts

the call and dials someone else now.

The sweet, fragile melody she has always used to manipulate my senses is gone, replaced by a chilling, razor-sharp

venom. She paces the pristine hardwood floor, the satellite

phone pressed hard to her ear as she speaks over the encrypted line.

“Miss. Nelson? Yes it’s Imema. Oh, you heard about that?

Miss. Nelson, I am telling you, there is absolutely no reason

I hold my breath, the blood in my veins turning to pure, unadulterated ice as I listen to her unfold the cruel strategy.

“Yes, the critics are swooning over her little performance

right now, but public memory is incredibly fickle,” Imema

continues, a light, mocking chuckle escaping her throat. She

walks over to a glass cabinet, pouring herself a splash of

clear liquor with a steady, untrembling hand. “Things that

go viral on the internet only stay in people’s minds for a few

weeks at most. By tomorrow morning, the narrative changes

completely.”

She takes a slow, elegant sip, her face twisting into an expression of pure, calculated malice.

“The trauma of the midnight attack is designed to be

absolute,” she reassures the caller, her words clipped, precise, and lethal. “The men I had Nick hire are professionals. By the time they are finished with her at the 12th intersection, Talia will be so thoroughly broken, so utterly

shattered, that she will never recover enough to touch a

piano again, let alone stand on a stage. She will completely

miss her breakthrough concert. The venue will cancel, the

investors will pull out, and her momentum will die right there

in the dirt.”
