Chapter 58
Talia’s POV
I have worked for Jack Carter long enough to know his prejudices. He despises wealth–not just it’s existence or possession, but the performative arrogance that often accompanies it. The Jones family, with their money and their drama and their casual cruelty, are exactly
the kind of people he despises most.
“It’s for his mother!”

Jack mutters, stirring a pot of something
that smells like ancient forests. “Two
years I’ve been supplying medicine, and that man hasn’t once darkened my

doorstep. What’s he doing? Outsourcing
his filial duty? Hiring someone to love his
mother for him?”
I wince internally. He’s not wrong.
“Mr. Carter, I know. But this is the last time I’m asking. Please.” I pause, choosing words carefully. “It’s to save my friend.”
He looks up sharply, eyes narrowing behind those ridiculous reading glasses. “Save your friend? From what?”
“She offended someone. The wrong
someone.
Jack is old, not stupid. He’s seen enough 24

of the world to read between lines. His
weathered face darkens.
“That husband of yours is threatening you? Using your friend as leverage?” His voice rises, genuinely angry now. “The man can’t be bothered to ask for medicine
himself, so he’ll blackmail you into getting it? Despicable!”
I hold up a hand. “Mr. Carter, you misunderstand. My friend did provoke him. I’m not here to defend Aires–God
knows he doesn’t deserve defending–but
I won’t twist the truth either.”
I explain the story- all of it. Electra’s confrontation with Nick, Imema’s
convenient suicide attempt, Aires’s 16:24

retaliation, the missing days, the fear, and the photo of my friend tied to a chair.
Jack listens in silence. When I finish, he’s quiet for a long moment.
Then he sighs, setting down his pestle. “I’ll help you. But there’s a condition.”
Hope flickers in my chest. “Anything.”
He studies me with those sharp old eyes. “You told me once you play the piaño. Professionally, before you married.”
“Yes.”
“I have patients. Elderly folks, mostly. Rural, lonely, forgotten by their families. 24

He waves a hand vaguely. “I’m organizing a charity event for them. A little entertainment, something to brighten their days. If you perform, I’ll give you the medicine.”
I blink. That’s it?
“Of course.” The words come out before I can stop them. “Absolutely. Mr. Carter, that’s not even a condition, it’s a privilege.”
He squints at me, suspicious of my enthusiasm. “You’re really willing to play for a bunch of old peasants? No fancy stages, no rich audiences?”
Ismile, remembering. “Before my mother

passed, my friend and I used to perform at orphanages and nursing homes regularly. It’s where I learned that music matters most when it’s shared with people who need it. This isn’t a hardship… it’s a reminder to go back to my roots.
Something shifts in his expression. Respect, maybe. Or recognition.
“Then it’s settled.” He nods firmly. “End of this month. Location to be decided, I’ll let you know.”
“End of this month. I’ll be there.”
He hands me a small wrapped bundle, containing the medicine. “Don’t back out. No matter what happens between now 16:24

and then. You show up.”
“I will, Mr. Carter. On my word.”
He waves me off. “Go on, now! Stop cluttering my workspace.”
I tuck the medicine carefully into my bag
and leave.

I find Aires at his office. He takes the
medicine bundle, turning it over in his hands with obvious skepticism.
“Are you certain this is genuine?”
My fists clench at my sides. The gesture is

instinctive and uncontrollable.
He doubts me, always doubts me. While Imema could confess to murder and he’d find a way to justify it.
“It’s real.” My voice is flat, emptied of inflection. “If you don’t believe me, show it to your mother. She’s been taking this exact medicine for two years. She’ll recognize it.”
He studies me for a long moment, those dark eyes searching for something, deception, maybe. Or weakness.
“Come with me,” he says finally.
Not an apology, not a thank you. Just. 16:24

another command.
I nod. “Fine.”
Because Electra matters more than my pride. Because winning this battle means I can keep fighting the war.
Because one day, he’ll run out of people to hold hostage. And on that day, I’ll be ready.

Author’s POV
Jack watched Talia disappear through the worn clinic door, her footsteps fading down the narrow alley. For a long

moment, he simply stared at the empty space where she’d stood, the lingering scent of her perfume mixing with the sharp herbs that filled his workspace.
Then he reached for his phone.
The number he dialed hadn’t changed in thirty years. Neither had the man who answered.
“Father?” The voice on the other end was incredulous, hopeful in a way that made Jack’s chest ache despite himself. “Is it really you?”
“I’ve decided.” Jack’s voice was gruff, unwilling to show the emotion clawing at his throat. “I’m coming back.”

The silence that followed was deafening.
Then chaos.
Ten minutes later, the narrow alley that had remained quiet for decades erupted into a parade of luxury vehicles. At least twenty of them–black sedans with tinted windows, gleaming SUVs, even a vintage Rolls that took up far too much space. Middle–aged men in impeccably tailored suits spilled out alongside elegantly dressed women whose heels were entirely wrong for the cracked pavement.
“Father!” His eldest son, Marcus, rushed through the clinic door with tears in his eyes. “This is wonderful–you’re finally coming home!”

Jack’s face contorted with fury. “Idiots! All of you!” He jabbed a finger toward the window. “Who told you to bring this circus to my door? Get those cars out of here now before I change my mind!”
Marcus flinched, then whirled on his
assistant. “You heard him. Move them.
Now.”
The assistant scrambled. Outside, horns
blared as the convoy began a clumsy
retreat.
Another son, Gregory, approached more carefully, as if approaching a wild animal. “Father, the welcome banquet is prepared. Everything is ready. We should

leave immediately.”
Jack’s glare could have curdled milk. “When did I say I was leaving now?”
Gregory blinked, confused. “But Father-”
“End of this month. Not a day before.” Jack crossed his arms, immovable. “And you“-he pointed at Marcus-“will send invitations to every family within our circle. Every single one. You will host a banquet. My return will be announced.”
Marcus’s face cycled through emotions- confusion, then dawning comprehension, then the solemn resolve of a man who understood his father well enough to recognize when he was being tested.

“It will be done, Father. Exactly as you
say.”
“There are conditions.” Jack’s voice sharpened. “Fail to meet them, and I stay here. Permanently.”
“Anything, Father. Name it.”
Jack told him. About Talia. About the medicine. About the performance at the end of the month. About the family who had been bullying her because she stood
alone.
By the time he finished, Marcus’s
expression had hardened into something cold and determined.

“I understand, Father. No one will touch her again. You have my word.”
Jack studied his son for a long moment, searching for deception, for the empty promises that had driven him away decades ago. He found only sincerity.
“Good. Now get out. All of you. I have
work to do.”
As his children filed out, chastened but hopeful, Jack turned back to his herbs.
“The Jones family,” he muttered to the empty room. “They think they can bully her because she has no backing. Because she’s alone. They think wealth makes

them untouchable.” He crushed a dried leaf between his fingers, watching it crumble to dust. “Let’s see how brave they
are when they learn she has the Carter family behind her.”
