Chapter 63
Talia’s POV
The investigation leads us to Imema’s ward. She’s calmer now, composed. The storm has passed, leaving only dewy vulnerability in its wake.
Aires doesn’t waste time. “Imema, did you meet Talia at the
café?”
Her eyes widen with believable surprise. “Mrs. Perseus? You
asked me to meet you there, remember?”
I stare at her. “I asked you?”
She nods, all innocence. “You sent a message. You said you
wanted to talk, that you were worried I wouldn’t come, so
you chose somewhere public. Downtown café. Safe neutral
ground.” She hands Aires her phone. “See? The message is right there.”
I lean in to look. And there it is, a message from the same
number that messaged me. The same words, mirrored on
her screen.

Something cold settles in my stomach. The number isn’t
mine, but the messages exist, perfectly balanced, impossible
to untangle.
Nick rises from his chair in the corner. His face is hard,
defiant.
“I sent them. Both of them. Imema had nothing to do with any
of this.”
Imema gasps, a hand flying to her mouth. “Nick? Why would you-”
“Because someone had to do something!” His voice rises,
righteous anger flooding his features. “Ever since you came back, that woman has done nothing but torment you. The lake, she pushed you in. You ended up hospitalized. Then she sent her friend to humiliate you, to push you to the brink… you almost died, Imema! And her friend just apologizes and
walks free?”
He points at me, finger trembling with rage. “Since Aires won’t punish her, I will! Now you all know. Come after me if
you want. I don’t care.”
Imema turns to Aires, tears streaming. “Aires, I know Nick

was wrong. But please, he stayed by my side through my
darkest days. He took care of me when no one else would.
Can’t you give him another chance? And Ms. Parker is fine…
she’s not seriously hurt. Could Ms. Perseus please drop the
charges?”
Her voice breaks beautifully. “Nick is all I have. If he’s taken
away, what will happen to me?”
Aires looks at me. “Talia. What do you think?”
I hold his gaze. “You want me to let the person who hurt my
friend walk free?”
I’ve tolerated their attacks on me. Their insults, their
schemes, their endless cruelty. But Electra? She only got
involved because of me. Because she loves me. And now
she’s bruised and broken because of it.
Nick acted because he believed he was untouchable.
Because Aires has never once held him accountable.
Aires’s voice softens–not with apology, but with reason.
“Imema needs someone to care for her right now. Her condition is fragile.”

My expression turns to ice.
This isn’t about Nick and Electra anymore. It’s about her and
I open my mouth to refuse, to fight, to finally stand my ground-
Aires takes my hand. The touch is so unexpected, so foreign,
that words die in my throat.
“Talia.” His voice is low, meant only for me. “Let’s step outside
and talk.”
I let him lead me from the room, too shocked to resist.
Behind us, Imema watches. And for just a moment, her tear–streaked face holds something else entirely.
Nick’s POV
The door clicks shut behind them, and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
“Imema.” I lower my voice, even though we’re alone. “You don’t think Aires will actually send me to prison, do you?” 4/8

She turns to me, and that fragile, wounded expression melts away. In its place is something sharper, more confident.
“Of course not.” Her smile is thin, satisfied. “Aires would never
do that to you.”
Relief floods through me. I grin, the tension releasing from
my shoulders. “Good. The more Talia pushes this, the more she just annoys him. She’s playing right into our hands.”
“She is.” Imema nods, composed and certain. “You didn’t
touch Talia. You hurt her friend. To Aires, that’s completely
different. Electra isn’t important to him. She doesn’t matter.”
She doesn’t matter.
Just like Talia, in the end.
I settle back into my chair, watching the door where they
disappeared. Aires will handle this. He always does.
For us. For her.
For me.

Aires‘ POV
We stand facing each other in the empty corridor, the
fluorescent lights humming overhead. Her expression is closed, guarded–nothing like the woman who used to look at me with hope in her eyes.
“Talia.” I keep my voice calm, reasonable. “I don’t want this to
escalate further.”
Something flashes in her gaze. Anger, quickly suppressed.
She knows what’s coming.
“I have work obligations. Imema needs constant care right now. If Nick is taken away, her condition could deteriorate.” I pause. “You understand.”
“What does that have to do with me?” Her voice is flat.
I choose my words carefully. “You can pursue this. You can send Nick to prison. But ask yourself—what do you actually gain? Temporary satisfaction? Revenge? And then what?”
She hears what I’m not saying. Electra wasn’t seriously hurt. In the grand scheme, she doesn’t warrant this fight. Nick matters more–to Imema, to me, to the balance of things. 6/8

Her eyes narrow. “What if I insist on pursuing it anyway?”
I meet her gaze. “You won’t have any evidence.”
A slow, cold smile spreads across her face. She holds up her
phone.
“I recorded Nick’s confession. Does that count?”
I stare at her. The phone gleams under the harsh lights, small and damning.
She planned this. She came prepared. The woman who used
to shrink from confrontation now walks in with weapons I
didn’t know she possessed.
When she distanced herself before, I thought it was strategy. A game. But this–this calculated ruthlessness toward my
mother, toward Nick–this is different.
Could she actually want a divorce?
No. Impossible. Aeson is older now. She wouldn’t-
“Mr. Perseus.” Her voice cuts through my thoughts, mocking.

“Are you planning to take my phone and destroy the
evidence?”
I focus on her face. On the challenge in her eyes.
“What if I said yes?”
The words hang between us, heavy with implication.
