Talia’s POV
Imema’s voice cuts through the chaos, dripping with
manufactured outrage. “Now that Aeson is having a
life–threatening attack, you’ve stopped the doctor from
rescuing him multiple times. I honestly have to question your
motives!”
Her words plant seeds in fertile soil. The crowd murmurs, glances exchanged, judgments formed.
“She’s the boy’s mother? The one who never comes home?”
“Doesn’t care for her son, and now she’s blocking his rescue?
What kind of woman does that?”
“Probably wants to start a new family. Kids are just obstacles to people like her.”
“Absolutely heartless. Disgusting.”
The words wash over me like poison, but I barely hear them. All I see is the stranger’s hands hovering over my son’s chest, ready to hurt him.

The man hesitates. My repeated interruptions have shaken his confidence. He’s not certain anymore–and uncertainty
with a child’s life is terror.
Aires’s voice cuts like a whip. “What are you waiting for? Save
my son!”
The man takes a shaky breath, steeling himself. His hands
descend-
A small body darts through the crowd.
Robin.
He’s running toward Aeson, something clutched in his small
fist. Before anyone can react, he’s at Aeson’s side, spraying something toward his nose and mouth.
Imema shrieks, shoving him hard. Robin crashes to the floor, the small spray bottle skittering away. “What are you doing?! This isn’t a place for your games!”
Robin sits up, wincing, his arm scraped and bleeding. “I’m not playing! I’m helping!”

“You bully Aeson constantly,” Imema snarls, her composure
cracking. “Now you’re interfering with his rescue? Do you
want him to die?”
Aires’s eyes are frozen fire. “What did you do?”
Robin shrinks back, but his voice stays steady. “I saved him.
Like Ms. Perseus said to.”
Imema laughs, incredulous. “There’s a doctor right there. You
listened to her instead?”
Robin looks at her like she’s the foolish one. “Ms. Perseus is
Aeson’s mother. She knows him better than any doctor.”
Aires’s voice drops to something terrifying. “If my son dies because of your interference, I don’t care how old you are.
You’ll wish you’d never been born.”
A gasp from the crowd.
“Look! The boy–he’s improving!”
Every head snaps toward Aeson. His breathing, once labored and stopped, is evening out. The terrifying flush is fading from his cheeks. His body lies still–not twitching, not seizing. 3/7

Resting.
The doctor picks up the fallen spray bottle, examines it, sniffs
carries. Nothing available on any market.
Aires stares at Aeson, then at me, then at Robin. Something
shifts in his expression–confusion, maybe. Or the beginning
of understanding.
I can’t stand anymore. My legs give out, and I slump to the
floor, gasping, trembling, the adrenaline crash hitting me like
a wave. My son is alive. He’s going to be okay. He’s—
The ambulance crew bursts in. They assess Aeson quickly, efficiently, fitting a small ventilator mask over his face.
One of them turns to the room. “Was there a medical
professional on scene? The initial treatment was perfectly
administered–exactly what this condition requires. If
standard CPR had been performed, given his specific
allergies…” He shakes his head meaningfully. “Whoever
intervened saved this child’s life.”
Silence.

Absolute, crushing silence.
Every eye turns to Aires. To Imema. To the strangers who held
me back, who called me monster, who blocked my path to my
son.
The doctor, confused by the sudden tension, addresses who
he assumes are the parents. “You must be the boy’s family. Please come with us to the hospital.”
Imema’s face burns. She can feel the weight of every stare,
every unspoken accusation. The reversal is complete, and it happened so fast.
Robin’s small voice rings out, clear as a bell. “She’s not
Aeson’s mother. Ms. Perseus is.”
He’s already at my side, small hands gripping my arm,
helping me rise. “Ms. Perseus, are you okay? Can you stand?”
I look at him–this child who isn’t mine, who I’ve known for
such a short time, who just risked everything to save my son
because I asked him to.
“I’m okay.” My voice is wrecked, barely audible. I try to stand, but my legs betray me. I slump against him, and he struggles 5/7

to hold my weight–a child holding up a broken woman.
Strong hands catch me from behind.
I turn, instinctive thanks on my lips. Then I see his face.
Aires.
My expression freezes. I jerk away, shaking off his grip like it
burns.
His hand closes around my wrist again, gentler this time but no less unyielding. “Aeson isn’t out of danger yet. Don’t you
want to see him?”
I hesitate. The thought of my son, alone in that ambulance,
scared and confused-
Robin tugs my sleeve. “Ms. Perseus, let’s go to the hospital. Please? Let’s go see Aeson.”
I look down at him. At his scraped arm, his brave face, his complete lack of hesitation even after everything.
“Okay.” My voice softens. I take his hand.
