Chapter 100
Elsa
I stepped out of the elevator in the morning, coffee in hand, mentally rehearsing my presentation for the Silver Ridge project. The familiar buzz of the office greeted me as I pushed through the glass doors to
the executive assistant area.
Then I saw her.
Vera was perched on the edge of Kayla’s desk, wearing a tailored navy
dress. Her dark curls were perfectly styled, and she was laughing as if
she’d never left.
My steps faltered. What the actual fuck? Wasn’t she supposed to be
rotting away at the Northern Branch by now?
Her eyes caught mine, and her laughter died, replaced by a smug
smile that made my stomach clench like I’d swallowed broken glass.
“Well, look who finally decided to show up,” she said, loud enough for
everyone to hear. “The dedicated assistant.”
I forced my face into a neutral expression while my inner wolf snarled

with rage. Breathe, Elsa. Don’t give this bitch the satisfaction. “Good
morning, Vera. I didn’t expect to see you here.”
“Drake called me back,” she said, emphasizing his first name with a
purr that made me want to rip her throat out. “He said I’m an asset to
the company and that I was… how did he put it?” She tapped a
manicured finger against her lips. “Oh yes, that I was the victim of a
petty sabotage attempt by someone who felt threatened.”
The implication hung in the air. I clenched my coffee cup tighter,
feeling the hot liquid nearly spill over. That manipulative bastard.
He’s making ME the villain after ordering me to get rid of her.
“He insisted I stay here in the assistant department, close to him,”
she continued, eyes gleaming with triumph. “Where I belong.”
My wolf bristled beneath my skin, hackles raised and teeth bared.
God, I
“Congratulations,” I said flatly. “If you’ll excuse me, I have work to
do.”
As I passed her, Vera leaned in close. “You should watch your back,
Elsa. I don’t forget those who cross me. And neither does my family.”
The threat wasn’t subtle. As an omega from a nobody family, I was

vulnerable in ways she could never be. Her family name carried
weight in the Black Obsidian pack–connections, influence,
protection. All I had was a temporary contract with an alpha who
couldn’t even publicly acknowledge me.
I settled at my desk, trying to focus on my emails, but my mind kept
circling back to Vera’s return. If Drake had indeed brought her back, it
meant he was actively undermining me.
After an hour of distracted work where I read the same email four
times without comprehending a single word, I marched to Drake’s
office. I needed answers.
I knocked twice and entered at his gruff “Come in.”
Drake was standing by the window, his broad shoulders outlined
against the cityscape. He didn’t turn when I entered, which just
pissed me off more. Always with the power plays, even in how he
positions his fucking body.
“Sir,” I began, keeping my voice professional while mentally picturing
stapling his expensive tie to his desk, “I noticed Vera Horton has
returned to the assistant department.”
“Your observational skills are as sharp as ever, Elsa,” he said dryly,
finally turning to face me. His golden eyes were unreadable, but I

could smell the smug satisfaction rolling off him.
“I thought she was being transferred to the Northern Branch.”
“Did you?” He raised an eyebrow. “You seemed so certain she was
interested in me. I thought about it and decided you might be right.
She deserves another chance.”
My jaw tightened so hard I thought my teeth might crack. Are you
fucking kidding me? YOU ordered me to get rid of her! “You’re
blaming me for her departure? You were the one who-”
“I didn’t fire her,” he cut in sharply. “You took that upon yourself.
