Chapter 105
I didn’t hesitate. I reached into my purse, pulled out my defense spray, and shot a stream directly into his face. “Fuck off, asshole!” I shouted as he howled, dropping the knife and clawing at his eyes. I
grabbed Susan’s wrist so hard she winced.
“Run! Now!” I yanked her away from the wall and pushed her toward the main corridor, my entire body vibrating with fear and
determination.
We sprinted down the hallway, Susan’s high heels clattering on the marble floor. Behind us, I could hear the man’s enraged shouts as he recovered enough to give chase.
“Elsa!” Drake’s voice cut through the chaos as we emerged into the main concourse. He was running toward us, his face a mask of fury
and concern.
The sight of him made my eyes burn with unexpected tears. For a split second, I wanted nothing more than to run into his arms and feel safe. My body swayed toward him involuntarily, betraying my
mind’s resistance.
Before I could move, Susan wrenched free of my grip and threw herself at Drake, sobbing dramatically. “Drake! Oh God, Drake! There

was a man–he had a knife–he tried to-” She buried her face against his chest, her body shaking with theatrical sobs.
“He said he wanted to cut me! He called me horrible names!” She looked up at Drake with tear filled eyes. “If Elsa hadn’t come when
she did…”
Drake’s arms tightened around Susan protectively, his expression softening as he murmured reassurances to her. I stood there, suddenly forgotten, my hands shaking violently at my sides. Of course. Save the girl, lose the credit. Story of my fucking life.
Behind us, the attacker appeared, still partially blinded but brandishing his knife. “Bitch! Rich fucking bitch! I’ll kill you!”
Security guards tackled him before he could get within ten feet of us. Drake turned, positioning himself between Susan and the commotion, shielding her with his body.
Jason appeared at my side, helping me up from where I’d stumbled during our escape. “Are you okay? You’re shaking.”
I hadn’t even realized I’d fallen. My hands were indeed trembling, adrenaline coursing through my system. I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the blur from my vision. “I’m fine.” My voice came out raspy and
thin.

“You don’t look fine,” Jason insisted, his hand warm on my arm. “You
look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
Drake barked orders at the security team while still cradling Susan
against his chest. “Get that psychopath out of here and call the
police.”
book He finally glanced at me, his expression unreadable. “Elsa, go rooms at the Moonlight Hotel across the street. We’re done for today.”
Are you fucking kidding me? I wanted to scream. I just saved your precious Susan’s ass, and you’re sending me on errands? But I swallowed the words, my throat burning.
“Drake,” Susan whimpered, clutching his shirt. “I’m so scared. That
man wanted to hurt me.”
“I know, sweetheart,” Drake murmured, his voice gentler than I’d heard in years. “You’re safe now.”
“I don’t want to stay in these clothes,” she said, looking down at her torn blouse. “They remind me of… of what happened.”
Drake nodded. “Elsa will pick up something suitable for you to wear.”
Of course. I get to be the errand girl after saving his precious Susan’s

life. My fingers curled into fists so tight my nails cut into my palms.
“Your dress is torn too,” Drake added, his eyes flicking to my skirt where it had ripped during the scuffle. “Get something for yourself as
well, The company will cover it.”
Such fucking generosity. I could feel Jason’s concerned gaze on me, but I refused to acknowledge the pity I knew I’d find there. I bit my tongue until I tasted blood, forcing back the flood of curses
threatening to spill out.
“Yes, sir,” I replied flatly, my face a rigid mask.
As I turned to leave, my heels clicking sharply on the marble floor, I caught a final glimpse of Susan pressing herself against Drake’s chest, her face buried in his neck. “Drake,” she whispered loudly enough for me to hear, “could you stay with me? I’m just so frightened.”
I didn’t wait to hear his answer. I already knew what it would be. I pushed through the mall doors, the cool air hitting my face like a slap, and finally let a single tear of rage slide down my cheek.
