Chapter 179
The primal claim in his words sent an involuntary shiver down my
spine, but I forced myself to stand my ground, my chin lifting in
defiance.
“Is that why you told me about the medicine? Guilt?” I challenged, my
voice rising as emotions threatened to choke me. “Because you know
my mother’s condition worsened after you redirected her treatment
to Vera’s precious daddy?”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Drake snapped, securing the towel around his
waist with an angry jerk.
“My mother cared for you,” I continued, the words spilling out before
I could stop them, tears pricking at my eyes that I refused to let fall.
A muscle ticked in Drake’s jaw. “This has nothing to do with her
condition.”
“Doesn’t it?” I pressed, knowing I was pushing him too far but unable
to stop, my chest heaving with each angry breath. “Seems awfully
convenient that you suddenly have access to this miracle treatment.”
Drake’s eyes flashed gold–the wolf rising close to the surface. For a

moment, I thought he might strike me. Instead, he brushed past me,
the contact sending electric currents through my body even as I
staggered from the force.
“Think whatever you want,” he growled. “But remember, I’m the only
one who can help her.”
The bedroom door slammed behind him with enough force to rattle
the pictures on the wall. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was
holding, my knees finally giving way as I sank onto the edge of the
bed. “Fuck,” I whispered, pressing the heels of my hands against my
eyes to stop the tears.
In my car, I searched for information about the silver poisoning
treatment Drake had mentioned, my fingers trembling as I typed.
Everything he’d said checked out–the price was astronomical,
starting at fifty thousand per cycle. A complete course would indeed
cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“Shit, shit, shit,” I muttered, gripping the steering wheel until my
knuckles turned white. There was no way I could afford this on my
current salary. The irony wasn’t lost on me–I’d spent years trying to
break free from Drake, only to find myself more dependent on him
than ever.

The next day, Kayla arrived at my apartment with boxes of my
personal belongings and office supplies from Stone Enterprises.
“Mr. Stone said you might need these,” she explained, her expression
carefully neutral as she set them down in my living room.
I thanked her absently, already sorting through the items, my
movements increasingly frantic. Among the paperwork and personal
effects, I found a business card I’d nearly forgotten about. Aiden
Wilson, CEO of Wilson Industries. I’d approached him at a business
function months ago. He’d offered me a position at his company, with
a salary that had made my eyes widen.
I’d declined then, trapped by my obligations to Drake. But now…
I stared at the card, my thumb running over the embossed lettering,
weighing my options. Wilson was arrogant, with a reputation for
being demanding, but his company was growing rapidly. The salary
he’d mentioned would go a long way toward my mother’s treatments.
Taking a deep breath, I picked up my phone and dialed the number on
the card, my heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat.
“Wilson speaking,” came the brusque answer.
“Mr. Wilson? This is Elsa Hale,” I said, forcing steadiness into my

voice despite the tremor in my hand.
A pause. “Ms. Hale. This is… unexpected.”
