Voren was slightly tensed, his muscles coiled beneath his skin. The relationship between him and his mother was different from what he ever had with Olivia.
This woman had died and returned, had walked through the veil between worlds and come back with knowledge that transcended mortal understanding. It was hard to comprehend what he was feeling—a strange blend of joy, relief, and an unsettling awareness that she saw things he couldn’t.
In the end, they walked away a little before his mother spoke. Her voice was soft, but it carried the weight of prophecy. "The black and white wolf are both powerful. If both your powers are awakened completely, I fear for what might happen." Her eyes were distant, focused on something beyond his sight.
Voren did not know whether to address her as his mother or the shaman in training, but right now, he knew the woman was speaking from the spiritual realm.
Her gaze traveled to Seraphine again, lingering on her daughter-in-law with a mixture of affection and concern. "She’s an amazing woman, and you bring her so much joy. That’s why she’s bound to you." Her voice dropped, becoming almost a whisper. "But you have to be careful. If you ever hurt her..."
Nervousness crept through Voren’s heart, a cold tendril wrapping around his chest. "Mom, I’m glad you know how much we love each other. I’ll never hurt her." He forced the words out, trying to anchor himself in the warmth of that truth.
His mother smiled, but it was a sad one, tinged with something he couldn’t quite name. "I’m only concerned about the Blood Moon festival." She reached out, her hand resting on his arm. "You must be ready to do what the moon goddess tells you, whether you like it or not."
"Can you tell me what it is?" Voren asked, his voice urgent. He needed to know, needed to prepare.
But the woman shook her head slowly, her expression unreadable. "The time is close. I have to begin my preparation." She pulled away, her hand falling to her side.
"I’m unfamiliar with this new pack but Vlad can take care of me. Go and take care of your duties." Her gaze met his, ancient and knowing. "No matter what, what has been done is done. You have gone too far with her, so destiny would only have to be rewritten." There was a short pause, heavy with meaning. "Just be ready to pay the price."
At that, she walked back to Seraphine and embraced her, her arms wrapping around her daughter-in-law with surprising warmth. "Sera, walk with me."
She pulled away and hand in hand, Seraphine walked around the pack with Oriana. The pack ground was quiet and still under the moonlight, most of the pack members asleep.
Luck was on their side. If they had been awake, it would have seemed strange, a woman who appeared younger than her daughter-in-law strolling through the grounds like a ghost.
"Your powers are growing stronger." Oriana’s voice was soft, admiring. "And the Grimroot pack is lucky to have you." She stopped suddenly, turning to face Seraphine fully. "Thank you for loving my son." Her eyes glistened. "But no matter what, you both must do what the moon goddess tells you during the Blood Moon festival."
Seraphine wanted to ask a question but the woman smiled and informed her, her voice gentle. "I’ll tell Vlad to take me to your mother. Her wolf gave me life, and you are carrying two lives." She cupped Seraphine’s face briefly. "Go and sleep."
Seraphine smiled and did not refuse. She was exhausted, the weight of the past days pressing down on her. But she remembered something and asked, her voice hopeful. "Any pregnancy tips?"
