Sarah’s breathing became rapid and shallow, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to contain her emotions. I could see the devastation in her eyes, and it took every ounce of willpower not to reach for her, to take back my words and beg for forgiveness.
She was staring at me as if seeing a stranger, her mind clearly racing through memories that contradicted my cruel words. I could almost see her remembering the tender moments we’d shared, the passion that had consumed us both.
“Alexander!”
Large tears finally broke free, rolling down her cheeks as she suddenly lunged forward and wrapped her arms around me in a desperate embrace. Her grip was surprisingly strong for someone so delicate.
“You can give up on that idea right now,” she declared, her voice muffled against my chest.
“No matter how much you deny it, no matter how much you hurt me, l won’t give up on you.”
“Even if you hit me or curse at me, I’m not going anywhere. If you say l have no shame, then I’ll be shameless. If you call me stubborn, then l’ll be the most stubborn person you’ve ever met!”
“You can try to drive me away all you want, but it’s not going to work!”
“I’m not letting you go, Alexander Blackwood. You can’t get rid of me no matter where you go!”
She clung to me like she was drowning and I-was her only lifeline.
The scent of her-that intoxicating mix of my body wash clinging to her skin and her own perfume-filled my senses, making it impossible to think clearly. For one dangerous moment, I allowed myself to feel the warmth of her body against mine, to imagine what it would be like to surrender to this pull between us.
But it was only a moment.
My rational mind screamed warnings at me: She’s a liar. She’s manipulative. She’ll use your feelings against you, just like before.
She’ll destroy everything you’ve built.
Sarah was a master of deception, so skilled at playing innocent and earning sympathy.
Those tears, that vulnerability-it was all calculated to make me weak, to make me pliable to her wishes.
Whatever she claimed to feel for me, it was a lie. In the end, she was just using me, like she always had. She’d say anything, do anything to get what she wanted.
